Summary

At Atlantic Poultry Incorporated (API) we are committed to feeding our communities through stewardship of the land and animals in our care to inspire the next generation of Atlantic Canadian Farmers. API is a proud supporter of the poultry industry, providing feed, chicks, and fresh eggs year around to our customers throughout Atlantic Canada.

The Hatchery Worker is responsible for the cleaning and sanitation of the Hatchery equipment and building as well as the removal of chicks from hatchers and transfer of eggs from setters to hatchers. The Hatchery Worker will be responsible for boxing eggs and egg transfers.

Schedule

The work schedule for this position is a rotation that includes weekends, averaging 40 hours per week. The individual must be able to work flexible hours, including some holidays, on-call as needed.

Position Accountabilities

  • Sorting and handling day old chicks humanely
  • Loading and handling eggs for hatching
  • Assist with Embrex vaccination
  • Transporting eggs throughout the hatchery
  • Clean and disinfect equipment using appropriate methods (high pressure, mop, washer, etc.)
  • General cleaning and setting up of equipment and rooms.
  • Box eggs and egg transfers
  • Provide an environment free of animal cruelty, abuse and/or neglect for our poultry
  • Protect the organization’s value by keeping all protected and proprietary information confidential
  • Practice bio security protocol.
  • Follow all safety processes and procedures
  • All other duties as assigned

Position Requirements

  • Grade 12 or equivalent preferred

  • Ability to work with live poultry

  • Strong commitment to health & safety

  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with multiple demands

  • Ability to lift up to 30 lbs for an extended period

  • Ability to work in a team environment

  • Experience in the agricultural industry preferable

  • Contribute to a positive workplace culture

Working Conditions

The position operates indoors in a production environment. The work environment is warm and humid and dusty at times with strong odours. Standing for long periods of time, repetitive tasks, and heavy lifting are common.
