We are currently hiring Supervisor, Quality Assurance and Food Safety to join the team at our Unity facility in Unity, Saskatchewan.
Located in the western part of Saskatchewan, Compass Minerals’ Unity Mechanical Evaporation Plant is one of the company’s four mechanical evaporation plants. The plant produces and packages a wide variety of salt products including water conditioning salt, bulk salt, food-grade salt and salt for agriculture. The Unity Evaporation Plant is located in a friendly community of 2,500 that loves hockey and curling, situated in the beautiful big-sky prairies, an hour from North Battleford and a 2 hour drive from Saskatoon. Summary:
Reporting to the Production Superintendent, this position is primarily responsible for performing quality assurance testing, analysis and interpretation of results pertinent to process and finished goods, supporting HACCP, GMP and Food Safety programs, respective audits, inspections and QSI investigations/reporting. Also responsible for coordination of collecting and arranging third party analyses of composite samples, testing required by the facility’s operating permit and others as requested. Performs function in a professional, safe, accurate and efficient manner. In addition, this position is responsible for directing and coordinating activities concerned with the safe production of Compass Minerals products by performing the associated duties, included below, either personally or through subordinate supervisors. Potential for overtime and weekend work.
How will you contribute to the team?
To perform this role successfully, the candidate will be responsible for, but not limited to, the following:
- Responsible for site Quality Management System, Food Safety program, HACCP, Food Defense and Third-Party Auditing.
- Confers with management to establish production, safety, sanitation and quality control standards, develop budget and cost controls, and facilitate inter and intra departmental communications.
- Plans and directs production activities with procurement, maintenance, and quality control to obtain optimum quality assurance and food safety in keeping with effective operations and cost factors.
- Reviews and analyzes production, quality control, maintenance, and operational reports to determine causes of nonconformity with product specifications.
- Develops and implements operating methods and procedures designed to eliminate operating problems and consults with engineering personnel relative to modification of machines and equipment in order to improve production and quality of products.
- Routine daily lab testing and analysis
- Conducts a variety of tests to determine chemical composition and content specific to given samples
- Assesses colour, solubility, turbidity, particle size, friability, dust and moisture relative to established quality standards and specifications.
- Performs mathematical computations associated with sample assessments. Mixes chemicals to create proper reagents.
- Documents all results and makes computer entries as required. Performs calibrations and minor repairs to testing equipment.
- Is a member of the Plant Sanitation Committee activities/tours/follow-up. Assist with the Plant Manual Sanitation procedures and assuring cleaning checklist follow-up for all departments.
- Perform other related duties as required.
What should you bring to the role?
- Requires a Bachelor of Science Degree (Chemistry or Food Safety) or equivalent education and experience.
- 5 – 7 years of lab experience, or food manufacturing and/or agricultural setting is considered an asset.
- Demonstrated experience in quality systems and tools (statistical methods, FMEA, control plans) is preferred.
- Direct experience in, or administration of, HACCP, BRCS, GFSI, ISO 2000, FSMA, and SFCR Standards, quality and/or food safety systems and production and laboratory procedures is desired.
- Intermediate to advance understanding of Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, and Visio)

What is the work schedule?
- Monday-Friday 40hr work week, onsite
- Participation in on-call rotation for plant coverage as per the annual schedule with other staff members
