About the role
POSITION SUMMARY
Support Staff in the 24-hr respite program will be responsible for providing respite services to guests at St. Felix Centre (SFC) including: facilitating access to resting spaces, meals, overdose prevention service (OPS), harm reduction supports, health resources and other community services while maintaining Health and Safety standards.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Promote a respectful, welcoming, friendly, and safe environment, utilizing crisis/conflict de-escalation techniques and trauma informed care
- Understand and apply a harm reduction approach to service delivery
- Be knowledgeable of, and perform duties consistent with SFC policies and guidelines and report any violations
- Communicate effectively and use a supportive, non- judgmental approach with all team members, managers, supervisors, guests, and stakeholders
- Perform intake procedures of new guests as per guidelines including intake for OPS
- Assist with meal preparation, service, and cleanup
- Facilitate access to services such as storage, showers, meals, sleeping space etc.
- Respond to medical and other emergency situations including opioid overdose
- Facilitate access to overdose prevention services including harm reduction and safer use coaching as per guidelines
- Witness drug use (intravenous, nasal, and oral) and monitor environment for safety
- Competent in the use of bag valve masks, oximeters, naloxone, administering oxygen
- Interpret and relay information about safer strategies for drug use based on available health resources
- Maintain cleanliness and sanitization of space to ensure SFC Infection Prevention and Control [IPAC] measures are maintained
- Maintain the cleanliness and organization of all the spaces at SFC including but not limited to:
- Cleaning bodily fluids from walls, stalls, sinks and the floor with bleach and PPE equipment
-Ensuring that sharps containers and bins are not overflowing, and changing them as necessary
-Discarding of any harm reduction supplies left over from guests
-Discarding of any debris
-Replacing empty toilet paper, soap dispensers and hand sanitizers
-Checking facility to ensure that sinks, toilets and showers are in working
-Mopping and sweeping regularly
- Monitoring of guests and maintaining an awareness of activities on or near all SFC property and report concerns as required
- Maintain program supplies, monitor inventory, and report shortages
- Perform referrals for guests using SMIS and Central intake
- Collaborate with other SFC departments to provide internal and external program referrals as needed
- Respond to overdoses and other medical emergencies as per St. Felix Centre protocols
- Accurately prepare all written documentation including shift notes consistent with SFC guidelines
- Report incidents involving guests including but not limited to injury, illness, and aggression or other risks to health and safety
- Maintain the confidentiality of guests and staff members
- Documenting and reporting complaints in a timely manner as per SFC procedures
- Maintain and model appropriate professional and ethical boundaries according to policy
- Adhere to and positively promote Health and Safety protocols including the use of appropriate PPE
- Be flexible to attend meetings outside of regular working hours as requested
- Additional duties as requested

- Safety precautions due to proximity with hazardous materials and/or contagious diseases.
- Flexible to travel between locations and some scheduled overtime is associated with this position
- Ability to lift 50 lbs, climbing stairs
EDUCATION
- Completion of BSW/SSW or similar discipline or equivalent work experience in a related field - Lived experience will be considered an asset
- Certificates and training will be considered an asset or willingness to be trained: First Aid and CPR, Overdose response and Naloxone administration, Non-violent crisis intervention, Anti racism and anti-oppressive practice, Food handlers’ certificate
- Joint health and Safety certification considered an asset
EXPERIENCE
- Minimum 1 year of experience working with people experiencing poverty, mental illness, trauma and substance use
- Lived experience will be considered an asset
- Demonstrated reliability and availability to attend scheduled shifts
- Experience working with people of marginalized communities
- Previous role in customer service or public service would be considered an asset
SKILLS
- Proficient in Microsoft office and Google suite
- Report writing and documentation skills
- Excellent verbal communication including in-person and phone interactions
- Demonstrated ability to de-escalate conflicts and remain calm under pressure
- Ability to work with diverse groups
- Ability to exercise diplomacy and high degree of integrity
