As a federated organization, we work with all orders of government – federal, provincial, and territorial and municipal - directly and through 45 local Habitats. This role will primarily focus on supporting the 24 local Habitats in Ontario as well as providing limited support for other provincial and municipal engagement in other parts of the country.
The successful applicant will have sound knowledge of public policy, especially as it relates to affordable housing, excellent writing skills and attention to detail, and the ability to prioritize and meet deadlines.
This position will report to the National Director, Housing Policy & Government Relations at Habitat for Humanity Canada.
Your Impact
As a valued member of our team, you will help advance our strategy to significantly increase the number of families obtaining and maintaining affordable housing through:
Government Relations – Ontario
- Build relationships with key provincial elected and public service officials relevant to housing.
- Represent the Ontario Habitat affiliates at consultations, key meetings, on working groups or convenings of housing stakeholders in Ontario and/or support the participation of a member of the Ontario Executive Committee.
- Work directly with the Ontario Caucus Executive Committee to develop and execute an Ontario-focused government relations and advocacy strategy.
- Create briefs, memos, letters, and other communications activities in support of advocacy work.
- Monitor legislative and policy developments related to housing provincially and municipally in Ontario and respond as needed in consultation with the Ontario Caucus Executive Committee.
- Seek opportunities to raise public awareness of Habitat for Humanity and specific Habitat Ontario advocacy on housing affordability and affordable homeownership.
Government Relations – Other
- In consultation with the National Director, put systems in place to monitor provincial, territorial, and municipal housing policies, legislation, and funding.
- Develop content and share relevant information with the Federation.
- Help to develop provincial fact sheets on housing affordability.
- Help to create guides and toolkits to support affiliates across the country in engaging with their provincial and local government.
Qualifications
- Undergraduate degree or commensurate experience in public administration, political science, communications, journalism or other relevant field.
- Demonstrable experience or education in Ontario housing policy or program delivery.
- Must be able to register as a lobbyist with all relevant jurisdictions.
- Valid driver’s license.
Skills & Attributes
- Self-motivated and well-organized worker.
- Proven success and passion for building and sustaining strong collaborative relationships with colleagues, government representatives, partners, consultants and community stakeholders.
- Federation or association experience will be an asset.
- Sound knowledge of Ontario housing policy. A degree in public policy studies or another related field will be an asset.
- Excellent writer with strong communication skills. Strategic communications and media experience will be an asset.
- Established or ability to quickly establish relationships with relevant provincial government and industry contacts.
- Demonstrated experience in analyzing and identifying threats and opportunities in legislation, regulations, and policies relevant to Habitat.
- Ability to undertake quantitative analysis and ability to demonstrate economic costs and benefits of proposed changes in government policy and taxation will be an asset.
- High ethical standards and a great reputation for integrity.
- Willing to work flexibly and to undertake occasional travel.
Salary Range
$80,000 - $90,000
