About the role

The Engineering Career Centre within the Schulich School of Engineering is currently seeking a Full-time Temporary Relief MEng Career Advisor for approximately 12 months.

The MEng (Master of Engineering) Advisor, reports to the Senior Manager, Experiential & Work Integrated Learning and is a part of the Engineering Career Centre team. The incumbent will primarily support the goals of the MEng Internship program, including internship program admission, Career Elevation programming, internship tracking, and ongoing professional development support for students in the program.

This position works 35 hours per week and during peak periods, this position will regularly organize and attend events outside of normal working hours on a shifted schedule.

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Oversee all aspects of the MEng internship program including admissions, communications, work permit letters, and access to job board.
  • Coordinate all aspects of the Career Elevation program, which is a milestone to entering the MEng Internship Program. This includes the delivery of 6 core workshops (including make up sessions) completion tracking, and assessment of skills.
  • Provide ongoing support in the job search process to MEng Students through individual advising, employer networking events, practice interviews, and skill development workshops.
  • Administer core tasks of the MEng Internship program through eligibility reports, Work Term Records, database maintenance, and job postings.
  • Support overall promotion of the MEng internship program including communication to students, networking with employers, and attending professional events as needed.
  • Ensure communication channels, such as shared email accounts, are answered and organized consistently.
  • Ensure industry participation at events and workshops through ongoing relationship building and upkeep of the industry partner database. (Orbis)
  • Hold regular Career Pop-up's to provide students with resume/cover letter guidance.
  • Draft, post and update web registrations for the seminars.
  • Keep statistics on the numbers of seminars held and students attending the seminars. the incumbent would be using the Orbis system.
  • Advertise and market services of the Alka & Sanjeev Khanna Engineering Career Center to our MEng engineering students, using support from Communications, Schulich School of Engineering.
  • Develop and utilize the website, newsletters and social media to engage both employers and students.
  • When needed, review MEng job postings for their suitability for internship, summer, and post graduation employment.
  • Utilize the new grads survey feedback to analyze trends and data then share information with students and employers.
  • Design and conduct quantitative and qualitative program evaluations, produce regular reports based on these evaluations, recommend and institute program changes when required.
  • Collaborating with other stakeholders, coordinate large-scale campus events such as Tech Fest, Capstone Design Fair, and APEGA Seminars
  • Other duties, such as academic advising support and leadership development sessions may be assigned by the Manager, Student Experience

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • An undergraduate degree is required with 5 years of experience in student career advising, graduate degree considered an asset.
  • 5 years experience with student services, HR processes, or job recruitment advising is required.
  • 2 years work experience and knowledge of Orbis, D2L, and Peoplesoft required.
  • Proven (2 years experience) ability to conceptualize, design, and implement new approaches to undergraduate advising and programs.
  • Experience working in graduate programs or with graduate level students would be considered an asset.
  • Expertise in the area of group-learning facilitation; in selecting and developing relevant facilitation methods (including support material) and in training student staff in relevant areas.
  • Ability to assess program effectiveness, analyze data, and report on metrics to highlight impact of programming.
  • Familiarity and 3 years experience with facilitating skills to assist students with job search success.
  • Ability to successfully handle a large, intense student workload with a positive student-centric attitude demonstrated by 3 years professional experience.
  • Demonstrated commitment to exceptional, proactive student service.
  • Outstanding interpersonal communication skills, including written, oral, one on one and group as demonstrated by professional experience.
  • Strong critical thinking, judgment and decision making skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure to meet strict and multiple timelines, working flexible hours to meet student needs.
  • Demonstrated ability to be resourceful, creative, innovative, and flexibility to work effectively individually and as a team member.
  • Experience developing and providing presentations for students.
  • Excellent computer skills including experience using technical advising tools (such as student information management systems like People Soft or Orbis, Degree Audit software and Microsoft Office), and a desire to learn and implement new software/programs.
  • Thorough knowledge of the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act. (FOIP)
