What we are looking for:
SmartICE is looking for a seasonal and part-time Community Knowledge Coordinator in Makkovik. We are partnering with the community on a new project to document and share important Inuit sea ice knowledge which will support safer sea ice travel around Makkovik.

The Details:
- Seasonal & Part-Time
- Duration: Late September 2025 to June 2026 and September 2026 to June 2027
- Hours: 15-20 hours per week
- Pay: $25/hour

Who we are:
SmartICE is the community sea ice monitoring service for Makkovik(www.smartice.org). We are an award-winning technological innovation for the North. SmartICE offers a suite of climate change adaptation tools that integrate Indigenous and local knowledge of ice with advanced data acquisition, remote monitoring and satellite mapping for ice travel safety. Our community-based services provide invaluable, data-supported insights into ice thickness and local ice travel conditions, in near real-time.
What you will do:

Hold workshops and meetings;

Learn more about using computers and mapping with computers;

Make posters, books, and maps for their community to share this knowledge; and

Learn how to monitor sea ice conditions using satellite data.

Travel for two annual training workshops in Nunavut in January and March, each year.
In late September or October trainers will come to Makkovik to work with you one-on-one. After the on-on -one meeting, training will take place in an on-line classroom with 10 other Inuit from across Inuit Nunangat.
What you bring:
- No sea ice experience necessary
- An interest to learn more about your community’s ice knowledge from Elders and experienced hunters
- Basic knowledge of how to use a computer and mobile phone
