The Alma Mater Society (AMS) is the University of British Columbia’s (UBC) student society, and works to improve the academic, social and personal lives of the 56,000 UBC students at its Vancouver campus. The AMS also runs nine food and beverage outlets, a catering and conference operation, and the AMS Student Nest, providing on-campus employment opportunities and generating revenue that goes directly back into supporting the students at UBC.
Position title: Student Life Program Coordinator
Reports to: Vice President, Student Life
Employee status: Hourly Exempt, Appointed
Length of term: July 14, 2025 – April 30, 2026
Hours per week: 15 hours per week
Compensation: $19.00 per hour
Position Purpose
The Student Life Program Coordinator supports the Student Life portfolio in the planning, execution, and evaluation of key AMS programs and events that foster community engagement, campus spirit, and student well-being. This includes providing support for major events including Interfaculty Cup, Interfaculty Mental Health Week, and additional initiatives under the Student Life portfolio or AMS Events. This role contributes to event planning, mental health initiatives, communications strategy, and partnership building. An ideal candidate is outgoing, comfortable getting to know new people from different communities, and passionate about promoting cross-campus collaborations.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Assist the VP Student Life in planning and delivering student government events, including Interfaculty Cup, Interfaculty Mental Health Week, and other Student Life programs and initiatives.
- Collaborate with AMS Events to support the development and implementation of AMS Events programming such as First Week, Welcome Back BBQ, Block Party, or other events.
- Attend and contribute to events and student life-related meetings while upholding the values and public image of the AMS.
- Assist in the development and implementation of resources to support student groups based on their needs, such as an event planning framework.
- Support facilitation of collaborative programs and events between clubs, constituencies, and campus groups which run similar programming related to student life and mental health.
- Support content creation for Student Life and student group programming through photography, videography, and graphic design.
- Support student groups in developing their social media strategies.
- Maintain detailed records for planning and reflection of events, including project overviews.
- Support the VP Student Life in staying informed of key events, initiatives, and emerging issues within campus communities.
- Support the VP Student Life in preparing and delivering presentations, reports, or proposals to AMS Council, student groups and other key stakeholders.
- Uphold the AMS’s mission, values, constitution, and Strategic Plan.
- Other duties as required.
Qualifications and Experience
- Must be a registered student at UBC Vancouver or one of its affiliated colleges.
- Must have experience in event planning and delivery or campus programming.
- Experience in project management, preferably with an AMS Club or Constituency is an asset.
- Experience with content creation, marketing, branding, or social media strategy is an asset.
- Strength in communication and relationship-building skills.
- Ability to work independently while contributing to a collaborative team culture.
- Must be able to work flexibly, adapting to the different needs and limitations of each project.
- Ability to meet deadlines and work well under pressure.
- Able to multi-task and manage several projects with different themes.
- Proven track record of showing initiative and maintaining confidentiality.
