Reporting to the Norton Rose Fulbright Canada CIO, this role sits at the intersection of law, technology, and innovation, and is responsible for driving the responsible use of AI to enhance legal decision-making, compliance, contract analysis, risk management, and operational efficiency. It will proactively and holistically advance the firm’s innovation strategy, enhancing legal service delivery, and fostering a culture of continuous improvement and client-centric innovation. Working in close collaboration with the CIO, Canadian IT leadership team, legal professionals, business services teams, AI/Innovation leads in other NRF regions, clients, and strategic partners, the role will be responsible for:
You will be focusing on:
Strategic Leadership
- Define and execute the AI and Innovation strategy aligned with organizational goals.
- Serve as a thought leader on the ethical and legal implications of AI technologies.
- Collaborate with executive leadership to integrate AI into legal and compliance frameworks.
- Promote a culture of innovation, and AI awareness and literacy across all teams and departments.
AI Implementation & Oversight
- Lead the evaluation, selection, and deployment of AI tools for legal use cases (e.g., contract review, e-discovery, regulatory compliance).
- Collaborate with IT and legal teams to ensure seamless integration of legal tech solutions.
- Work with technology vendors and internal teams in developing and updating extended workflows and playbooks.
- Maintain industry and legal sector awareness of technology innovations and recommending proactive steps to capitalize on suitable initiatives.
Risk Management and Compliance
- Ensure that innovation initiatives comply with legal, regulatory, and ethical standards.
- Implement secure systems for handling sensitive legal data.
- Oversee AI model governance, including bias mitigation, explainability, and auditability.
- Develop internal policies and training programs on the responsible use of AI in legal contexts.
Process Optimization
- Streamline legal workflows through automation and process redesign.
- Standardize legal service delivery models (e.g., contract lifecycle management, matter management).
- Identify and act on process improvement opportunities throughout Business Services.
- Consider opportunities for continuous improvements to reduce cost or improve efficiency.
- Use data analytics to identify inefficiencies and measure performance improvements.
Other
- Maintain fiscal responsibility for the AI budget and provide KPI reports as required.
- Be an active member of the IT leadership team and provide support with strategy development, planning and resourcing.
What you bring to the role:
- 10+ years of experience in technology or operations, preferably in a large law firm or corporate legal department.
- Demonstrated success in leading AI, innovation or transformation initiatives to tangible results.
- Understanding of AI model lifecycle, data governance, and responsible AI practices, especially as they apply to legal use cases.
- JD or equivalent legal degree, and active membership in a Canadian law society are assets but not required.
- Proficiency with legal tech tools and platforms (e.g., document automation, AI, CLM) and specifically Harvey and Microsoft Copilot.
- Experience with design thinking, agile methodologies, or process improvement frameworks (e.g., Lean Six Sigma) is an asset.
- Awareness of existing, new and emerging technologies, and processing environments.
- Excellent communication and creative skills. The ability to effectively present and ‘sell’ concepts is critical.
- Exceptional stakeholder management skills. Able to expertly and confidently present innovations, ideas and proposals at senior level and communicate in an eloquent, clear and concise way to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Effective leadership skills, including soft and interpersonal skills, teamwork, facilitation and negotiation.
- The ability to analyse complex technology and project issues, remove blockers and support project managers in the delivery of the portfolio.
- Experience of delivering in a regulated sector. The ability to understand where guidelines should be modernized or challenged.
- Excellent knowledge of spoken and written French considered an asset.
Vancouver Salary: from $150 000 ++. Salary will be discussed and negotiated during interview and could vary widely based on experience.
