University Health Network (UHN) is a major landmark in Canada´s healthcare system and a teaching hospital of the University of Toronto. UHN Foundation raises funds for research, education and the enhancement of patient care at Toronto General and Toronto Western hospitals, Toronto Rehab and The Michener Institute of Education at UHN. Position Overview

The Director, Finance plays a critical leadership role in overseeing the day-to-day operations of the UHN Foundation’s Finance portfolio, ensuring excellence in financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, compliance, and operational execution. Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer (CFO), the Director leads a high-performing team and partners with departments across the Foundation to ensure fiscal discipline, strategic alignment, and continuous improvement. This role combines hands-on financial leadership with team management, cross-functional collaboration, and a commitment to transparency, accountability, and service excellence.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Operating & Reporting

  • Lead the preparation of accurate, timely, and insightful financial reports, including monthly financial statements, variance analysis, and internal dashboards.
  • Oversee annual budgeting and quarterly forecasting processes, ensuring alignment with Foundation priorities and operational realities.
  • Ensure accuracy and efficiency in accounts payable, payroll, and general ledger activities.
  • Identify opportunities for automation, efficiency, and process improvement in financial workflows.
  • Work with internal and external stakeholders to ensure compliance with donor intent while delivering exceptional customer service. Proactively manage risks within the grants function, including the monitoring and strategic use of dormant funds.
  • Oversee investment reporting and manage the Foundation’s treasury function to ensure optimal liquidity and maximize investment returns in alignment with policy.
  • Identify and pursue opportunities to fund the operations of the Foundation, including oversight of the Gift Allocation Policy to ensure appropriate and sustainable application of funds.

Strategic Support & Business Planning

  • Support the CFO in multi-year financial planning, scenario modelling, and strategic projects.
  • Provide thought leadership on the design and effectiveness of financial systems and reporting infrastructure.
  • Evaluate current accounting systems and recommend enhancements to improve functionality, efficiency, and user experience.
  • Partner with IT or external vendors as needed to lead finance system upgrades, implementations, or process automation initiatives.
  • Ensure financial systems and tools support decision-making, internal controls, and future scalability.

Compliance & Risk Management

  • Ensure compliance with regulatory, audit, CRA, and internal control standards.
  • Coordinate audit preparation and liaise with external auditors to support annual audit activities.

  • Support enterprise risk management by assessing organizational risks and identifying appropriate mitigation strategies.
  • Oversee policy development and enforcement to ensure sound fiscal practices and mitigate risk.

Team Leadership & Development

  • Lead, coach, and develop the Finance team, fostering a collaborative, accountable, and learning-focused environment.
  • Set clear goals and expectations, support professional development, and promote cross-training to build organizational resilience.
  • Model the Foundation’s values and contribute to a positive and inclusive workplace culture.

Stakeholder Engagement

  • Serve as a key point of contact for internal partners requiring financial guidance and support.
  • Communicate complex financial concepts in clear, actionable ways to non-financial stakeholders.
  • Represent Finance in cross-functional working groups and strategic planning sessions as needed.

Requirements

  • CPA designation required; MBA or related graduate degree considered an asset.
  • 7–10 years of progressive experience in finance and accounting, with at least 3 years in a leadership role.
  • Deep understanding of financial systems architecture and data flows, not just user functionality; able to assess what “good” looks like and drive continuous improvement.
  • Proven experience improving or implementing financial or ERP systems (e.g., Microsoft Dynamics, Sage Intacct, NetSuite, etc.).
  • Experience in the charitable or nonprofit sector is an asset, particularly with CRA regulations, restricted funds, and donor accountability.
  • Strong technical proficiency in accounting systems, reporting tools, and Microsoft Excel.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead high-performing teams, manage competing priorities, and influence across functions.
  • Excellent communication skills with a proven ability to present financial insights to diverse audiences, including senior leadership, committees of board (audit, finance and investment) and internal stakeholders.
  • Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and a proactive, solutions-oriented approach. -Values-driven leader with a commitment to inclusion, integrity, and continuous improvement.
