Planning Intern (18-month Contract) JOB POSTING ID: 25E-42 The Corporation of the City of North Bay is currently seeking applications for the contract position of Planning Intern. Reporting to the Manager of Planning & Building Services, this position is responsible for assisting with a wide range of planning development projects and initiatives that support the City’s strategic objectives.

The Major Responsibilities Of This Position Will Include

  • Supporting Planning & Building Services and other departments within the Community Development and Growth Division where appropriate and necessary in all aspects of Special Projects Delivery & Policy Implementation.
  • Responding to requests for information regarding planning and policy document interpretation and providing general operational support to the Planning Department.

Note: This position is conditional on federal funding being approved. Eligibility Requirements : The Youth Intern will:

  • be unemployed or underemployed youth (person aged 30 and under);
  • have graduated within the last three (3) years with a degree, diploma, or certificate from a recognized post-secondary institution;
  • be legally entitled to work in Canada;
  • have not previously participated in the Program or in any other federal or provincial internship program with pay for a period of six (6) months or more;
  • not be related to directors, officers or managers of the Recipient; and
  • be living and working in Northern Ontario.

Qualifications

  • A bachelor’s degree in Land Use Planning or a Degree in a Planning related program.
  • Membership or eligible for membership or working towards membership in the Ontario Professional Planners Institute and the Canadian Institute of Planners.
  • Effective oral and written communication and interpersonal skills to present and interact with various levels of the internal organization, external government agencies/authorities, the development community, ratepayer groups and the general public.
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to matters of public interest and political context.
  • Ability to work independently and willing to take on new challenges.
  • Strong understanding of Ontario land use planning framework, the Planning Act, Provincial Planning Statement, Official Plans and Zoning By-laws.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications, such as word processing, spreadsheets, database and presentation software applications, as well as Internet research abilities.
  • Valid G Driver’s License.

Assets: Excellent analytical, mathematical, logic and deductive reasoning skills in combination with creative thinking abilities are preferred.

Hours of Work: Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. (35 hours per week, with one-hour unpaid lunch daily)

Salary: $61,528 per year plus vacation pay as legislated in accordance with the Employment Standards Act.
