Position Overview

Under the general direction of the Manager Health Services, the Music Therapist is responsible for using evidence-informed music-based interventions as a therapeutic tool for the people we serve, to restore, maintain and improve mental, physical and emotional health; responding to their psychosocial needs; prioritizing caseloads; managing the daily organizational components of the Music Therapy Program; and supervising music therapy students and interns. The Music Therapist acts in a professional manner adhering to the principles of Person Directed Living.

Experience

  • Experience working with adults as a Music Therapist in a healthcare setting preferred.

Education (Degree/Diploma/Certificate)

  • Bachelor of Music Therapy required.

SPECIAL TRAINING:

  • Medical Terminology - Therapist is responsible for acquiring appropriate knowledge of terms, disease entities, medical/surgical procedures, tests and protocols specific to their programming.

Certification/Licensure/Registration

  • Must be registered with the Canadian Association of Music Therapists OR eligible for certification and become certified within 6 months of hire.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Basic computer skills required.
  • Trauma informed and culturally competent practice preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills, observation and assessment skills required.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills required.
  • Excellent or strong proficiency in a primary instrument and ability to use a range of instruments in therapy.
  • Excellent organizational skills required.
  • Must demonstrate an understanding of adult and geriatric development, psychosocial and emotional needs of older adults, and therapeutic interventions to support coping, engagement, and well-being through music.

This position requires a current satisfactory Criminal Records Check (including Vulnerable Sector Search), Child Abuse Registry Check and Adult Abuse Registry Check as conditions of employment. The successful candidate will be responsible for any service charges incurred. A security check is considered current if it was obtained no more than six (6) months prior to the start of employment.
