Java Software Developer ' FT Permanent About Research IT Research IT supports the software and data needs of the SickKids Research Institute . We operate in a diverse technology environment and work closely with researchers and administrators to build tools that make a real difference. In this role, you'll contribute directly to scientific innovation by supporting systems that power pediatric research
The Research IT team at the Hospital for Sick Children's Research Institute is expanding our suite of modern Spring Boot applications that support the day-to-day operations of Canada's largest child health research enterprise. Several new services have recently launched, with more in active development, this role will directly contribute to those projects.
In addition to new development, you'll help maintain an ecosystem of legacy Java web and JAR-based applications . Enhancements or bug fixes are occasional but essential to keeping key administrative workflows running. We're also on the verge of modernizing these legacy components as part of a broader platform renewal initiative.
This is a full-stack role . You'll gain experience across all layers of the application: working with relational databases, middle-tier business logic, and user-facing interfaces .
You'll be part of a small, collaborative agile team , working closely with project managers, business analysts, and infrastructure partners. Our practices are evolving, and you'll have a voice in how we grow.
Here's What You'll Get To Do
- Build Spring Boot applications, REST APIs, and supporting services
- Work across the full technology stack: database, backend logic, and front-end UI
- Support legacy Java 1.6-1.8 applications with occasional fixes or enhancements
- Write clean, testable, maintainable code
- Collaborate with stakeholders to understand requirements and deliver solutions
- Participate in planning, code reviews, and continuous improvement activities
Here's What You'll Need
- Post-secondary education in Computer Science or a related discipline
- 3+ years of Java development experience, including recent Spring Boot work
- Experience building and consuming REST APIs
- Experience with HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and jQuery
- Exposure to modern front-end frameworks such as React
- Experience with ORMs like JPA or Hibernate
- Proficiency with relational databases (Oracle, MySQL, PostgreSQL)
- Familiarity with Git and Jenkins
- Demonstrate commitment and actions in advancing equity, diversity and inclusion objectives
