Cemetery Worker, On-Call

As a Cemetery Worker, you will be involved in locating graves, crypts, and niches as well as the interpretation of interment orders. You will perform duties individually and in a team environment. Primary duties include:
- Open and close burial graves, grave dressing and removal, mausoleum and columbarium entombments, and the disinterment of buried caskets and urns.
- Offer assistance to the public with pall bearer duties, locating graves and receipt of required permits.
- Provide landscaping maintenance, tree and shrub planting, placing and removal of sod, excavating holes and trenches, litter collection, snow removal and general maintenance.
- Perform routine equipment and tool maintenance and keep and maintain a daily working log.
- Use power equipment (for example: front end loaders, skid steers, 4 wheeled trucks, snow blowers) and common hand, power or labouring tools (for example: picks, shovels, crowbars, jackhammers).
Qualifications
- A High School diploma or equivalency (for example: GED) combined with at least 1 season (6 months) of cemetery experience, including heavy labouring experience.
- A valid Class 5 Driver's Licence (or provincial equivalent) and have the ability to obtain a Class 3 Driver's Licence with air brake endorsement (or provincial equivalent).
- Preference will be given to applicants who can interpret and understand maps and work orders.
- Strong communication and problem-solving skills, the ability to work effectively independently and in a team setting.
- Possess sound judgement and the ability to respond in a professional and positive manner when interacting with co-workers, customers and funeral homes.
W****orking Conditions: Works outside in all weather conditions. Works with and around hand operated and small equipment (For example: jackhammers and frost thawing units), large equipment (For example: dump trucks, front end loaders, backhoes, and Bobcats) and emotionally upset family members. This is an on-call position required to work on short notice and at various cemetery sites as required.
Pre-employment Requirements
- Must obtain a City of Calgary operator's permit.
- Applicants must pass the cemetery training module program within 1 month of their hire date.
- Successful applicants must provide proof of qualifications.
Pre-employment Drug Test: An offer of employment for this position will be conditional on an applicant passing a pre-employment drug test. This test assesses for use of drugs including cannabis. Failure to pass a pre-employment drug test may prevent an applicant from being hired into any safety sensitive position for a period of up to twelve months.
