What the job involves
- We’re looking for a Staff Engineering Manager to lead GitHub’s Web Systems team; the group responsible for architecting and maintaining the frontend infrastructure that powers GitHub.com
- This team builds and owns the platform that enables product engineers to ship accessible, performant, and scalable UI by default
- Web Systems maintains the UI build and delivery pipeline, including monorepo tooling, server-side rendering (SSR) infrastructure, frontend CI/CD, and performance observability
- The team’s work is foundational to every web product team at GitHub
- This is a rare opportunity to lead a high-leverage team and shape the systems, standards, and priorities that influence how GitHub builds for the web—driving quality not only through infrastructure, but through culture and clarity
- You'll lead and coach a high-performing team of engineers responsible for GitHub’s frontend infrastructure
- Drive the roadmap and delivery of core systems such as modern build tooling, SSR infrastructure, monorepo management, and frontend observability
- Help product and engineering leaders understand the impact of platform investments by making invisible infrastructure work visible, measurable, and connected to user and business outcomes
- Partner with platform teams, product engineering, and leadership to align on priorities, identify pain points, and drive adoption of best practices across the organization
- Maintain and evolve critical systems such as the UI asset pipeline, testing infrastructure, and deployment automation
- Foster a culture of inclusive collaboration, engineering excellence, and continuous improvement
- Help guide architectural decisions that support GitHub’s long-term scale, accessibility, and performance goals
- Collaborate daily with internal engineering teams, product management, and engineering leadership to align on priorities and deeply understand the problems we need to solve
- Coordinate cross-functionally to reduce friction, scale best practices, and steer the organization toward unified infrastructure approaches
- Unblock obstacles for your team ensuring engineers stay focused on solving meaningful problems
- Run regular 1:1s with direct reports to provide clear, actionable feedback and support career growth and progression
- Shape the team's roadmap and execution strategy, making sure foundational infrastructure work moves forward with clarity and purpose
- Communicate effectively with stakeholders—keeping them informed of project milestones, team health, system performance, and risk areas
- Review architectural proposals and implementation plans to ensure the team delivers resilient systems and high-quality code
- Maintain high team velocity by balancing thoughtful design with fast iteration—shipping features, fixes, and infrastructure improvements continuously
- Model and reinforce a culture of engineering excellence, inclusion, and continuous learning
