About the role

Under the direction of the Compost Technologist III, the Compost Technical Assistant provides technical support to assist in contracts, planning, and implementation of diversion and recycling programs including waste wood management and composting programs, landfill gas recovery, vector control, leachate control, waste disposal and related programs.

As the Technical Assistantyou will:

  • Assist the Technologist III in sampling windrows for oxygen, temperature, moisture, and oxygen.

  • Assist in survey calculating volumes of windrows and tracking using computer applications.

  • Assist in keeping track of windrows in different stages of composting, scheduling, and material management.

  • Inspect incoming loads from Contractor’s vehicles for unacceptable material.

  • Assist in acquiring applicable data using appropriate technology. Including assisting in regular GPS surveys and drone flights.

  • Assist with the setup, take down and operation of the rain gun and water irrigation systems.

  • Assist in the preparation of technical reports related to contractor progress and performance, as required.

  • Perform other related duties consistent with the classification, as assigned.

Your education and qualifications include:

  • Grade 12 or equivalent combination of training and experience, plus the successful completion of relevant courses from Red River College or equivalent program of study directly related to the position.

  • Must be a graduate in Civil Engineering Technology from a recognized Institute of Technology, such as Red River College.

  • Must be eligible for membership in C.T.T.A.M. (Certified Technicians & Technologists Association of Manitoba) as a Certified Engineering Technologist (C.E.T.) or Certified Applied Science Technologist (A.Sc.T.) would be preferred.

  • Demonstrated skill in the use of CAD equipment and software, specifically AutoCAD.

  • Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer and proven skills with Microsoft Office Suite applications (E.g. Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access) at a basic level.

  • Demonstrated knowledge and ability to operate GPS equipment and related software.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of Guidelines for Compost Quality by the Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment.

  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and specifications, legal descriptions and plans.

  • Ability to carry out project work as directed and to prepare or complete required reports and records.

  • Ability to understand and execute verbal and written instructions.

  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with employees at all levels of the organization, external contacts and the public, in accordance with the Respectful Workplace Standard.

Conditions of employment:

  • The successful applicant must maintain legal eligibility to work in Canada. If the successful applicant possesses a work permit, it is their responsibility to ensure the permit remains valid.

  • A Police Information Check satisfactory to the employer will be required from the successful candidate, at their expense.

  • Must possess and maintain a valid Class 5 Manitoba Driver’s License. The successful applicant will be required to provide a driver’s notice in force document upon request.

  • Must be physically capable of performing the duties of the position, which may include, but are not limited to: the ability to lift 50 pounds, work outdoors in potentially extreme weather conditions, ability to stand and walk over for prolonged periods and over uneven terrain for extended periods as required by work assignments.
