Role

New Metric Media is seeking a Vice President, Business & Legal Affairs (BLA) to help propel the company into its next phase of growth. This is a dynamic role suited to a business-minded lawyer who brings both strategic insight and a hands-on approach. As the leader of the Business & Legal Affairs function, you’ll shape the legal strategy, build and guide the team, and partner closely with our development, production, finance, merchandise & licensing, and corporate groups to support an expanding slate of television productions and related initiatives.

Responsibilities

  • Lead, support and develop BLA team
  • Provide concise legal advice to internal stakeholders and external counsel to execute
  • Support the Business Affairs team and Legal Counsel to execute on business affairs activities related to productions including tax credits and advising on the availability of financial incentives for film, television and digital projects from CAVCO, CMF, Bell Fund, Ontario Creates etc.

Establish processes and systems to streamline the negotiation, drafting, and execution of agreements across the business, including:

  • Talent and literary agreements at both development and production stages
  • Contracts with private and public funders, including broadcasters (development and production), rights acquisitions, payment schedules, and sales terms Sales and acquisitions agreements, with a strong understanding of windowing and monetization strategies
  • Development-stage IP acquisitions
  • Production-related agreements such as clearances, vendor services, music licensing, insurance, and product placement
  • Distribution agreements for domestic and international markets
  • Ancillary rights agreements, including merchandise, licensing, live touring, video games, and e-commerce
  • Corporate agreements related to HR, vendors/suppliers, and strategic partnerships

Qualifications

  • Qualified lawyer (J.D. or LL.B) in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario
  • 7–10 years of relevant experience in corporate/commercial law, entertainment law, or an in-house legal role
  • Strong knowledge of copyright law and intellectual property
  • Deep understanding of Canadian content regulations, funding models, and the broader Canadian and U.S. entertainment landscape
  • Well-versed in working with film and television guilds, unions, and funders (e.g., WGC/WGA, ACTRA/SAG, DGC/DGA, CMF, Telefilm)
  • Respected reputation among agents, unions, and funding bodies
  • Skilled in negotiating and drafting corporate, commercial, and IP agreements
  • Familiarity with business concepts including finance plans, budgets, cash flows, and revenue-sharing models
  • Excellent legal and business judgment with a proactive, solution-oriented mindset
  • Outstanding organizational skills and attention to detail; able to prioritize effectively in a dynamic environment
  • Strong negotiation, analytical, and written communication skills
  • Proven leadership experience; fosters high performance and team development
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects and meet time-sensitive deliverables
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to influence and communicate effectively across all levels of the organization
  • Confident, dependable, and results-driven, with a high level of integrity
  • Comfortable leading presentations and providing strategic counsel to a wide range of stakeholders
