PHYSICAL EDUCATION INSTRUCTOR

The Physical Education Instructor is responsible for creating programming to teach fitness techniques, skills and activities that motivate students to understand the importance of a healthy and active lifestyle outside of the classroom.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Develops programming using a systematic plan of lessons, discussions and field trips based on the curriculum set out by Manitoba Education;
- Adapts classroom activities to the capabilities and learning style of the student;
- Communicates and shares information with families or support staff regarding daily incidents and interactions;
- Records, collects and reports data on the progress of students as requested;
- Teaches and role models positive and effective coping mechanisms and helps to counsel students in modifying behaviours;
- Develops an awareness of each student's individual psychological, educational, physical, spiritual, and social needs and goals, and provides an individual-based approach to providing non-judgmental support;
- Helps students to identify personal strengths to promote growth, self-worth and a sense of belonging;
- Completes incident reports in an accurate and timely matter, logging them into Mayet as required;
- Assists the Crisis Counsellor in intervening in crisis situations and engages in behaviour management according to the guidelines and framework of Marymound’s policies and procedures, the student’s safety plan, NVCI and ASIST;
- Completes incident reports in an accurate and timely matter, logging them in Mayet as required;
- Communicates and shares information with families or support staff regarding daily incidents and interactions;
- Records, collects and reports data on the progress of students as requested;
- Participates in school recreational activities and field trips as required;
- Demonstrates an active commitment towards professional growth and advancement through participation in training, workshops, etc.;
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Post-secondary education in Child & Youth Care and/or Educational Assistant program is preferred;
- Demonstrated experience supporting and instructing groups in a physical education setting is an asset;
- Experience providing physical, psychological, and social support to students or at-risk youth or other vulnerable populations is essential;
- Knowledge of the physical education curriculum as set out by Manitoba Education;
- Knowledge of learning styles and supportive requirements for learning to better adapt materials for students;
- Must be familiar with the developmental, educational, emotional, social and recreational needs of children and youth;
- Mental health/crisis training certifications including NVCI (Non-Violent Crisis Intervention) and ASIST (Applied Suicide Intervention Skills) are preferred;
- Experience working from a trauma-informed perspective is preferred;
- Valid First Aid/CPR is required;
- Valid class 5F driver’s license and satisfactory driver’s abstract;
- Access to a reliable vehicle is preferred;
- Satisfactory Criminal Record and clear Vulnerable Sector checks;
- Clear Child Abuse Registry and satisfactory Prior Contact checks;
- Knowledge of Indigenous culture, or willingness to learn, including participating in cultural practices, programming and ceremonies alongside youth;
- Willingness to transport students is considered an asset;
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
- Demonstrated decision making and problem solving skills;
- Working knowledge of computers and experience with Microsoft Office software; working knowledge of Mayet is considered an asset;
- Physically able to perform the duties of the job.
