DESCRIPTION:
Under the direction of the Program Manager, the Respiratory Therapist (RT) provides respiratory therapy services in the hospital according to standards of the institution and the Respiratory Therapy regulating body. Responsible for participation in departmental, hospital and educational activities, which are supportive of professional and corporate objectives. Adheres to professional obligations as required by the College of Respiratory Therapists of Ontario (CRTO). The RT is responsible for delivery of care consistent with the vision and values of the hospital and the standards of relevant professional organizations.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Meets the College of Respiratory Therapists of Ontario (CRTO) Standards of Respiratory Therapy Practice.

Provides respiratory therapy services in the Pulmonary Function Lab including diagnostic testing, liaison, trouble-shooting, review of records, documentation and follow-up.

Reviews orders for appropriateness and accuracy. Consults with physicians and/or nurses to solve problems and recommend changes. Initiates and maintains required records and documentation.

Maintains certification in and performs controlled and delegated medical acts as required.

Maintains appropriate documentation related to all patients under his/her care.

Acts as an integral member of the interdisciplinary team in designated clinics and medical services.

Develops, reviews, updates, implements and evaluates educational material and programs for patients and family members.

Provides education to patients, families and other health care workers.
-
Participates in the respiratory therapy student program in the role of preceptor.

Directs, supervises and evaluates activities and care provided by students.

Participates in the orientation of new respiratory therapy and administrative staff members.
-
Participates in quality improvement and risk management functions.
-
Participates in the collection and documentation of workload measurement data.
-
Maintains professional competence through staff development and continuing education.

Observes and promotes health and safety regulations of the department and the hospital.

Participates in maintaining a clean, orderly, secure, and safe work environment.

Performs related work as requested.

EDUCATION, QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE:
- Eligible for registration with the College of Respiratory Therapists of Ontario
- One year recent related experience preferred.
- Evidence of strong organizational skills with the ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines is essential.
- Maintains confidentiality.
- Commitment to provide a positive patient experience with adequate support and positive patient outcomes.
- Demonstrated good interpersonal, communication, and organization skills.
- Commitment to standards of excellence and accountability.
- Good working knowledge of relevant legislation including:
- Personal Health Information Protection Act,
- Regulated Health Professions Act (RHPA)
- Public Hospitals Act
- Copyright legislation
- Occupational Health and Safety Act.
- Capable of coping with a physically demanding workload.
- Experience in an ambulatory care environment, preferably in a Pulmonary Function Testing laboratory preferred.
- Proficiency in speaking and comprehending both English and French preferred.
