Course Information
This course builds upon and deepens understanding parent / caregiver engagement in their children's learning and on the development of skills to create positive and collaborative relationships with parents/caregivers. Particular attention will be given to supporting the needs experienced by newcomer and minoritized families as they navigate a new country, school system, language and culture. .25 credit.
The Faculty of Education invites applications for a Limited Duties Instructor to teach Parent Engagement and Supporting Newcomer and Minoritized Families as part of the Bachelor of Education program. The instructor will guide teacher candidates in exploring research, policy, and school-based strategies for engaging families in ways that are inclusive, culturally responsive, and equity-oriented. The course prepares candidates to work effectively with families across a wide range of social and cultural contexts and equips them to foster stronger school-community partnerships in support of student learning.
Deliver course content through synchronous online instruction.
Support teacher candidates in understanding the barriers and opportunities involved in family-school relationships, particularly for newcomer and minoritized families.
Guide students in applying research and policy frameworks (e.g., Ontario’s Parent Engagement Strategy) to real-world teaching contexts.
Facilitate critical reflection on bias, privilege, and systemic inequities in education as they relate to family engagement.
Provide constructive feedback and evaluate student learning through reflective assignments and practical activities.
Collaborate with the Teacher Education Office or course coordinator, if applicable, to ensure quality and alignment with program outcomes.
Responsibilities
You will be responsible for all activities associated with the successful delivery of the course, including but not limited to: developing, preparing, and delivering the course; setting and marking examinations, assessing the academic work of students, and reporting grades.
Candidates must be willing to undertake training as required by the Employer including, but not limited to, training in respect of health and safety, harassment and discrimination, and legislated service standards.
Qualifications
Qualifications (Minimum Required):
- Master’s degree or equivalent qualification in education, family and community engagement, social work, equity studies, or a related field.
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience related to parent/caregiver engagement in education.
- Record of effective teaching performance at the post-secondary or teacher education level.
- Experience working with diverse communities, including newcomer, immigrant, and minoritized families.
- Familiarity with inclusive communication strategies, culturally responsive pedagogy, and community-based educational partnerships.
Preferred Qualifications / Assets:
- Doctoral studies (Ph.D. or Ed.D.) in a related field.
- Ontario College of Teachers (OCT) certification in good standing (current) or held within the last five years.
- Experience facilitating school-community partnerships or working in family liaison or outreach roles.
- Knowledge of the Ontario Leadership Strategy and Capacity Building resources related to parent engagement.
- Experience using equity-informed approaches to differentiate family engagement strategies.
- Experience supporting teacher candidates in reflective, community-based, or practice-integrated learning.
- Training or certification in Equity and Inclusive Education, Culturally Relevant Pedagogy, or Family-School Engagement frameworks.
