Commercial Property Accounting Manager

About the Role

In this leadership position, you will oversee a team of property accountants and help ensure the accurate, timely delivery of financial reports and analyses. You will guide the team through monthly and annual accounting cycles — including budgets, forecasts, tax processes, and audits — while building a strong, collaborative environment. This role is hands-on and also focused on continuous process improvements and professional development.

Key Responsibilities

  • Supervise, train, and mentor the property accounting team, ensuring all deliverables are completed accurately and on schedule
  • Manage and review all financial activities, including property budgets, cash flow forecasts, operating cost recoveries, property tax calculations, and audit files
  • Resolve accounting issues and make sound decisions that support business and client objectives
  • Plan workloads, monitor progress, and allocate resources to keep all processes on track
  • Develop team members’ technical, analytical, and communication skills through ongoing feedback and support
  • Strengthen accounting procedures and drive improvements that enhance accuracy and efficiency
  • Support senior management with special projects and strategic initiatives
  • Maintain strong working relationships across departments and provide exceptional client service
  • Oversee property account setup, financial reconciliations for property turnovers, tax reporting, and close-out processes

Your Qualifications

  • CPA designation (or equivalent), in good standing
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related discipline
  • 6+ years of progressive accounting experience, including at least 2 years in a leadership or supervisory capacity
  • Strong expertise in property accounting, real estate financial reporting, and financial controls
  • Proven skill in preparing and reviewing budgets, forecasts, audits, tax reports, and operating cost recovery reconciliations
  • Experience coaching and developing team members while fostering a supportive, collaborative work culture
  • Technical proficiency in accounting software (e.g. Yardi) and advanced Excel (pivot tables, financial modeling)
  • Ability to work under pressure, make decisions efficiently, and manage multiple deadlines
  • Excellent communication skills and a client-focused, solution-oriented mindset
