Intergovernmental Relations Project Coordinator

Location: 11821 123 St NW, Edmonton AB

Position Status: Full-time (40 hours/week), 1 Year Employment Contract

The Otipemisiwak Métis Government is seeking a compassionate and dedicated Intergovernmental Relations Project Coordinator to support various programs and projects within our Intergovernmental Relations(IGR) Department.Reporting to the Intergovernmental Relations Project Manager, the successful candidate will focus on fostering community connectivity, creating spaces for healing, and facilitating meaningful dialogues that honor the experiences of survivors. The Project Coordinator will work closely with Métis community members, survivors, and partner organizations to plan and facilitate program activities, including interviews, community engagement events, healing workshops, and commemorative gatherings. The successful candidate will demonstrate a strong understanding of cultural sensitivity, possess excellent communication skills, and have the ability to engage with diverse groups to ensure the voices of Métis survivors are heard, respected, and preserved.

Key Responsibilities

  • Foster meaningful connections with Métis residential school survivors, families, and community, to create a safe and respectful space for sharing lived experiences and building trust.

  • Support trauma informed practices that honor the voices and experiences of survivors, ensuring all engagements are approached with empathy, dignity, and cultural sensitivity.

  • Plan, coordinate, and facilitate meetings, workshops, and training sessions to support the development and implementation of program activities.

  • Utilize appropriate research tools and methodologies to collect, analyze, and present data gathered from Métis residential school survivors, with a focus on respectful and trauma-informed interviewing techniques.

  • Discuss findings with Métis Citizens in a professional, ethical, and confidential manner without compromising data security.

  • Communicate effectively with senior staff, elected officials, and external stakeholders to provide regular updates, reports, and briefing materials related to project progress and community engagement.

  • Collaborate closely with internal Otipemisiwak Métis Government departments and affiliates, ensuring seamless execution of interdepartmental projects and shared objectives.

  • Other duties as required or assigned.

Skills & Competencies

  • Ability to produce professional documents, reports, and presentations.
  • Highly detail-oriented, with strong data entry and information management skills, and the ability to communicate findings clearly in both written and verbal formats.
  • Proficient in computer and software applications, including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams) and the ability to learn and utilize data collection and archiving tools.
  • Strong planning, organizational, and problem-solving abilities, with the capacity to prioritize tasks, adapt to unforeseen challenges, and work efficiently under pressure.
  • Self-motivated and accountable, with a commitment to meeting deadlines and following established policies and procedures within the Otipemisiwak Métis Government.
  • Ability to build collaborative, positive relationships with a variety of internal and external stakeholders, including clients, community members, senior leadership, and Otipemisiwak Métis Government employees.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to present sensitive information to various audiences in a respectful and professional manner.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality when handling sensitive information.
  • Culturally sensitive, compassionate, and trustworthy.
  • Awareness of the history and social impact of residential schools on Indigenous populations.
  • Knowledge of relevant policies, ethical standards, and best practices related to survivor rights, trauma-informed care, cultural safety, and the respectful collection and sharing of sensitive historical and personal information.
  • Knowledge of Métis history, culture, and issues affecting Métis people. An in-depth understanding of the Otipemisiwak Métis Government and Métis culture, people, and values is an asset.

Qualifications

  • Post secondary degree/diploma in Statistics, Indigenous Studies, Political Science, Sociology, or related field. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • A minimum of two (2) years of experience in a research based, data collection, or government administrative role, is an asset
  • Experience working in an Indigenous and/or non-profit setting is an asset.
  • Indigenous Awareness Training is considered an asset.

Other Requirements

  • Position will be based in Edmonton, AB.

  • Ability to work a regular schedule from Monday – Friday, 8:30 AM – 4:30 PM, with occasional evenings and weekends as required, with notice.

  • Must be willing to travel within Alberta and work irregular hours, on occasion, to meet project needs.

  • Must have a valid Class 5 driver’s license and an operational vehicle.
