Job Description
We are currently seeking a Network Design Intern to join the Systems Engineering team at our Toronto, Canada office.
The intern will assist with various project activities and work on specific initiatives such as script development, KPI updates, and automation of tasks and processes. This role also provides the opportunity to train an intern for potential future opportunities within the department.
Key Accountabilities:

Converts customer (internal and/or external) requirements into conceptual designs and prepares associated documentation by performing operational analyses, simulations, and technical trade-off studies to evaluate alternative design configurations and functional features.

Creates new concepts or modifies existing ones to fulfill customer requirements.
-
Develops and documents detailed network designs based on the requirements.
-
Deploys solutions in the lab and supports testing activities.
-
Participates in technical reviews of component designs, installation designs, vendor selection and qualification, and other related areas.

Provides support for field issues.
-
Prepares and supports bids and proposals, including customer requirements compliance assessments, gap analysis, architecture design, simulations, trade-offs of key features, and estimations.

Presents technical designs and reports to customers and/or other engineering or management groups in clear, complete, concise, and unambiguous terms.

Interfaces and builds working relationships with software, hardware, and testing teams to ensure timely analysis and resolution of in-house and field test issues.

Must be able to accurately report work progress and estimates to complete the assigned tasks.
Key Requirements
-
The successful candidate should be working towards a bachelor’s or master’s degree from an accredited university or college in System, Electrical/Computer Engineering, Computer Science degree, or a related field.

Completion of the first year of your undergraduate degree, or currently pursuing a master’s degree.

Knowledge of network principles and technologies, including Ethernet/IP-based networking (switching and routing protocols).

Ability to commit to a full-time schedule (40 hours per week) for the duration of the internship.

Willingness and ability to work in a hybrid environment. Interns are expected to be onsite daily during the first month, and at least three days per week thereafter. Flexibility is required, as in-office expectations may vary based on team needs.

Excellent written and spoken English skill is required.
Preferred Qualifications:
-
Co-op student available for a 12-month term, with at least one additional quarter or semester of coursework remaining after the completion of the internship.

Previous coop/internship experience is an asset.

Knowledge of network principles and technologies: Redundancy and high-availability technologies; Network/IT services; MPLS and VPN technologies; RF networking (802.11, LTE); Rail signalling such as CBTC
-
Knowledge of specification-driven network design (as it applies to computer systems with both hardware & software operation are assets)
