About the role

We are seeking a knowledgeable and safety-focused Locomotive Supervisor to oversee railcar movement and switching operations within our manufacturing facility. This individual will be responsible for supervising a team of switchmen and operators, and ensuring the safe, efficient, and timely movement of railcars to support production and logistics schedules. The role involves working a rotating shift schedule and requires a strong understanding of rail operations, safety compliance, and effective team leadership.

  • Lead, train, and supervise a team of switchmen and operators in the safe and effective movement of railcars throughout the yard and plant. Promote a safety-first mindset and ensure strict adherence to company and regulatory safety standards.
  • Oversee daily locomotive operations, including switching, spotting, and moving railcars to support production, shipping, and receiving needs.
  • Monitor switching activities to ensure compliance with industry safety regulations, proper communication protocols, and standard operating procedures.
  • Coordinate rail movements with internal departments (Shipping, Receiving, Production) and external parties (rail carriers) to ensure on-time delivery and minimize delays.
  • Conduct regular safety meetings, perform job observations, and lead incident investigations as needed. Encourage hazard reporting and a culture of continuous safety improvement.
  • Track performance metrics, document daily switching activities, and ensure proper recordkeeping in line with operational and regulatory requirements.
  • Identify process inefficiencies or equipment issues and work with Maintenance and Operations teams to implement corrective actions.
  • Ensure that locomotives and switching equipment are in proper working condition through daily inspections and timely coordination of maintenance or repairs.

Skills/Knowledge/Experience Required

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; post-secondary education in transportation, logistics, or a related field is an asset.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in railroad operations, with at least 2 years in a supervisory or leadership role.
  • Strong working knowledge of rail switching procedures, locomotive operation, and yard safety protocols.
  • Familiarity with Transport Canada regulations, rail yard signaling, and communication procedures (radio protocol).
  • Proven leadership skills with the ability to coach and motivate a team in a fast-paced, safety-sensitive environment.
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving abilities, with attention to detail and a commitment to operational excellence.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for working with team members, other departments, and external rail service providers.
  • Ability to work in a physically demanding, outdoor environment in all weather conditions and on a rotating shift schedule.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: From $39.05 per hour
