About the role

Job Summary

Reporting directly to the Director of Care, the Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) works within their full scope of practice to provide safe and effective nursing care with the interdisciplinary team in accordance with policies, procedures and current standards. The LPN will act as liaison with the AHS Case Manager and is responsible for managing resident’s care plan and coordinating with Health Care Aides (HCA) in facilitating high quality, smooth delivery of resident centred care, while providing independence, dignity and respect at all times.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Understanding and adhering to the philosophies, policies, procedures and practices of Signature Retirement Living.
  • Carries out assigned tasks as directed by the Director of Care (DOC) or Clinical Resource Nurse (CRN) and documents accordingly.
  • Orients personnel at the request of the DOC or CRN.
  • Collaborates with other personnel to ensure continuity of care.
  • Cooperates with and assists other staff in providing services to the resident, including Alberta Health Services staff members.
  • Maintains a safe and clean environment.
  • Deals tactfully and courteously with residents, families and visitors and reports any problems to the DOC.
  • Maintains resident records and required documentation in accordance with policies, procedures and legislated standards.
  • Fosters resident centered care, recognizing unique resident situations and complexity of care delivery within the residence.
  • Acts as the team leader, providing direction and leadership to a team of HCAs and co-LPNs.
  • Completes medication administration duties as per policies and procedures, including acting as a resource for HCAs with questions and dealing with unusual events.
  • Responds to resident call bells and door alarms promptly, as assigned.
  • Completes all aspects of resident care as outlined in the care plan and assignment, within their scope of practice and seeks assistance from DOC or CRN if unsure of any task.
  • Communicates with DOC and AHS Case Manager about activities, needs and problems related to resident care and/or safety.
  • Maintains effective communication and good interpersonal relations with medical and allied health staff, residents, families and other departments.
  • Ensures that own personal grooming is appropriate, and that uniform/dress is clean, tidy and according to dress code (which includes the wearing of the Tracker as per established policies).
  • Carries out all duties in a safe manner, adhering to policies at all times.
  • Participates in resident care planning and case conferences.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Maintains current registration as an LPN with the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta.
  • Knowledgeable of health and safety regulations.
  • Experienced in seniors’ care, retirement living, supportive living or long-term care.
  • Good verbal and written English skills.
  • Valid First Aid and CPR.
  • Work in an environment where there are many distractions and attention is needed on numerous issues at a time.
  • Be flexible with schedules and assignments.
  • Well-organize with attention to detail.
  • Walk, stretch and stand on a variety of surfaces for at least 4 hours per day. Frequently lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Push and/or pull wheeled equipment up to 50 pounds.
  • Bend, stoop, and/or sit on a regular basis.
  • Frequently assist with the safe lifts and transfers of residents throughout the shift.
  • Climb stairs and work in confined spaces.

Job Type: Casual

Pay: Up to $31.86 per hour

Expected hours: No less than 16 per week

  • Every Weekend
  • Holidays
  • Monday to Friday
  • Morning shift

  • Weekends as needed
