About the role

ROLE

As a Registered Nurse working in Muskoka Algonquin Healthcare’s Critical Care Unit you will;

  • Provide optimum quality of intensive patient care.

  • Evaluate patients, and co-ordinate and provide total patient care and other assigned duties according to policies and procedures of Critical Care/Step Down Unit.

  • Give medications and treatments as prescribed by the physician to Critical Care/Step Down Unit patients.

  • Performs ECG’s as required.

  • Responsible for physician orders, requisitions and all charting of patients under his/her care.

  • Demonstrates thorough knowledge of Code Blue procedures and duties and assumes charge position until doctor arrives; supervises staff members involved in Code Blue procedures.

  • Assist charge person in the overall management of the Critical Care/Step Down Unit and as a member of the Rapid Response.

  • Participates in discharge planning/multidisciplinary rounds.

REQUIRED EDUCATION & CERTIFICATION(S)

  • Bachelor of science in Nursing from an accredited university
  • Current Registration in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario
  • Currently certified in Critical Care procedures as established by Nursing Administration and Medical Director
  • Current BLS (Basic Life Support)
  • Current ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
  • Certificate in Critical Care Nursing, or willingness to obtain, or equivalent in experience
  • Current IV certification, including management of central lines

REQUIRED SKILLS & EXPERIENCE(S)

  • Ability to work effectively with patients and colleagues.

  • Decisive and sound judgement in handling difficult situations.

  • May be assigned to accompany patients on transfer.

  • Visible and approachable for patients, families and staff with ongoing communication regarding patient monitoring and evaluation of activities. Ability to carry out teaching programs to Critical Care/Step Down Unit patients.

  • Excellent client counselling, interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to negotiate and effectively interact as a team member in an interdisciplinary setting.

  • Effective leader, organizer and planner capable of making timely decisions and exercising tact and good judgement.

  • Effective time management skills.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Coronary Care Certificate.
  • Physical Assessment Course.
  • CNCC(C) – Certified Nurse in Critical Care- Canada Certification.
  • Cardiology and intensive care nursing experience.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Location: South Muskoka Memorial Hospital (SMMH) located in Bracebridge. Applicants must reside within 125km of one of our hospital campuses or be willing to relocate prior to starting. *Exceptions will be considered on a case-by-case basis

Hours of Work: Must be available to work shifts including days, evenings, nights and weekends. Shifts and hours may change according to departmental requirements per the collective agreement.
