About the role

The AMA is recruiting for the new position of Manager, Fees. As a member of the Physician Compensation and Economics team, the Manager, Fees will play a critical role in ensuring that AMA initiatives are supported through compensation strategy and policy development on behalf of Alberta physicians.

The AMA has a hybrid work environment. The successful candidate will be based out of our Edmonton or Calgary office and will have the opportunity to work from home but will be required to go into the office or attend in person when required. Regular travel throughout Alberta will be required to attend meetings with physicians and government and/or other organizational representatives.

Position Overview

Reporting to the Senior Advisor, Policy and Economics, this role manages AMA’s physician billing education program, including overseeing the development and delivery of virtual and in-person physician billing education sessions related to the Schedule of Medical Benefits (SOMB) and billing for uninsured services.

The Manager provides advanced billing advice, advocacy and support to physicians regarding billings and payments for SOMB and uninsured services. The Manager, Fees, will also provide leadership and direct supervision of a Fees Specialist.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manages AMA’s physician billing education program. Including overseeing the development and delivery of virtual and in-person physician billing education sessions related to the Schedule of Medical Benefits (SOMB) and billing for uninsured services.
  • Provides advice and support to physicians and clinic staff in fee-for-service and alternative-to-FFS compensation arrangements, ensuring correct billing practices.
  • Provides recommendations for additions and amendments to the SOMB to ensure accurate billing and stewardship of health resources.
  • Collaborates with and/or provides advice to other branches/team members in relation to physician practice issues relating to compensation and billing.
  • Provides advice, options and recommendations related to the Schedule of Medical Benefits or other physician payment issues with internal and external stakeholders including AH and WCB.
  • Supervision of staff person, including assigning work, coaching/mentoring, entitlement management, conflict resolution, training and development, etc.
  • Complete and/or support the preparation of documentation to request the addition of new health service codes to the fee schedule. This occurs with new technology and changes in practice patterns.

Education and Experience

  • Undergraduate/Bachelor’s degree in business, health or related field.
  • Five years’ experience within healthcare with preference given to individuals with Alberta Health claims’ experience.
  • Comprehensive and in-depth knowledge of the Schedule of Medical Benefits including management and analysis of fee‑for‑service schedules.
  • Clinical experience as a front-line health care worker would be an asset.
  • People management experience is an asset.
  • Excellent knowledge and understanding of the Alberta Health Care Insurance Act, the Alberta Health Care Insurance Regulations the Canada Health Act, other provincial fee schedules and the WCB Act and Regulations.

  • Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to establish and maintain relationships and collaborate effectively with a diverse range of stakeholders.
  • Proven leadership and people management skills; ability to motivate, coach and develop team members(s); promote cohesion and teamwork; willingness to listen and learn from others.
  • Proven organizational and planning skills, with the ability to manage competing and concurrent priorities and tasks, within tight time frames.
  • Excellent communication skills include the ability to tailor materials and complex information into clear, understandable terms for diverse audiences.
  • Proficient facilitation skills to engage the audience and encourage active participation.
  • Strong problem solving and critical thinking skills, with the ability to analyze problems, gather information and suggest options and/or solutions.
  • The ability to establish and maintain effective and collaborative relationships with the physician leadership, executives, key external stakeholders and business partners.

The salary for this role is between $99,182 – $128,937 per annum.
