About the role

Discover TRIUMF, Canada's particle accelerator centre. We are a publicly funded, not-for-profit research lab that is a hub for discovery and innovation.

Our mission is to serve as Canada’s particle accelerator centre. We advance isotope science and technology, both fundamental and applied. We collaborate across communities and disciplines, from nuclear and particle physics to the life and material sciences. We discover and innovate, inspire and educate, creating knowledge and opportunity for all.

TRIUMF's diverse community of nearly 600 multidisciplinary researchers, engineers, technicians, tradespeople, staff, and students create a unique incubator for Canadian excellence, as well as a portal to premier global collaborations. Fueling innovation and improving lives, we are committed to accelerating discovery and shaping a better world.

Join Our Team at TRIUMF! TRIUMF is home to an impressive accelerator complex, including the 520 MeV Cyclotron, Electron Linear Accelerator (E-LINAC), TRIUMF Isotope Separator and Accelerator (ISAC) facility, Advanced Rare IsotopE Laboratory (ARIEL), TR13, and TR24 cyclotrons. We are seeking an entry-level accelerator operator to join our diverse team in the control room.

At TRIUMF, you'll participate in exciting projects and collaborate with leading institutions and researchers. We offer a dynamic work environment that encourages continuous learning. As our accelerators operate 24/7, the individual in this role will work on a rotating shift schedule.

Responsibilities Key responsibilities of our operators include:

  • Operating and monitoring accelerator systems in a fast-paced control room environment to safely, reliably, and timely deliver particle beams to experiments.
  • Responding to alarms from ancillary systems, including electro-mechanical devices, cooling services, vacuum equipment, power supplies, and computer controls.
  • Identifying and troubleshooting accelerator system faults.
  • Assisting with emergency response activities and ensuring site security protocols are maintained.
  • Mitigating radiation hazards using ALARA (As Low As Reasonably Achievable) principles.
  • Communicating effectively with researchers, engineers, and support staff to ensure smooth operations.
  • Documenting shift activities in logbooks and producing statistical records.
  • Authoring and editing operational procedures.
  • Participating in the coordination of accelerator maintenance activities, including issuing and processing work permits.

As an accelerator operator, there will be occasions when you work independently and when collaboration with other operators or members of various other groups is essential. Accelerator operators must demonstrate versatility, excelling in both independent work and collaborative teamwork.
