The incumbent orients patrons to library services primarily during afternoon and evening hours at the Circulation Desk, including when a supervisor is not available to provide immediate support. The work involves maintaining user accounts and assisting with materials borrowing, finding and retrieving information, computer and technology services, and meeting room reservations. The person must exhibit good judgment, be prepared to make decisions independently, and model a collegial, team-based approach to work.

Specific Duties

  • Answering questions in person, by phone or email and helping students, employees and community users find material using the library catalogue and other sources.
  • Educates patrons on library services, policies and procedures, and redirect inquiries to appropriate library staff or college members as required.
  • Physically shelving books, shelf-reading, shifting inventory and general maintenance of collections, including tidying, dusting, cleaning, reading, scanning, organizing, blocking, evaluating condition of materials, flagging problem items, minor repair work.
  • Checking materials in/out; sanitizing returned items; renewing/ placing and removing holds/searching and reporting lost materials; adjusting fines; and contacting patrons about requested items.
  • Issuing library cards and registration/maintenance of patron records, ensuring patron confidentiality.
  • Receiving and applying payments (cash, debit, credit card) for various services and sales.
  • Demonstrates and provides support for library/media services equipment and various web-based tools.
  • In computer labs and public computer stations, responsible for replacing toner and paper, and assisting users with basic questions as time allows.
  • Handles Lost and Found for library-related items and passes items on to security, as required.
  • Handles room booking requests and complaints, monitoring and troubleshooting for noise/unauthorized use; explaining/interpreting procedures.
  • Compiling monthly statistics (reference, patron entrances, room bookings).
  • Maintains and indexes College news clippings files.
  • Responsible for securing the library space, collections and equipment, and conducting periodic inspections of the library space reporting any maintenance, technology, or safety issues for resolution.
  • In the absence of Media Services staff during their after hours, issue equipment keys, and loan/receive media equipment from Media Services and resolve service issues, as needed.
  • Provide technical guidance to part time and casual staff and participate in their training.
  • Closing and securing library at the end of the evening shift.
  • Maintains a general appearance of Library space.
  • In the absence of the Library Technician-Circulation, handles duties such as opening the library, daily cash deposits, maintaining till float, closing debit/credit terminal, production and distribution of Overdue notices, processing materials and Reserves, flagging/unflagging students in student record system, updating databases and new student spreadsheets, providing technical guidance to day staff, monitoring and corresponding with faculty by phone, in-person and via email.
  • Responsible for creating promotional displays to highlight and promote collections.
  • You will be part of a team actively engaged in contributing to and accomplishing the vision, mission, and goals of the College and in supporting the aspirations and needs of our learners.
  • You will promote a positive work atmosphere by interacting and communicating in a professional manner that demonstrates mutual respect with students and colleagues.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

Skills & Qualifications

  • Recognized two (2 ) year diploma in Library and Information Technology, or equivalent (min. 2 years post-secondary)

  • 1 year or more relevant library/office/customer service experience. Previous library experience is required

  • Courses/training in Microsoft Office and library systems/databases

  • Computer experience required (e.g. library systems, word processing, database, spreadsheet, online applications), with keyboarding minimum 40 wpm, 90% accuracy

  • Ability to deal well with public and fellow employees.

  • Ability to prioritize tasks, interpret library policies/procedures, work independently

  • Good organizational skills.
