We are currently recruiting for the following role in our Montreal office:

Advisor, Client & Business Development The Role The Advisor, Client & Business Development (Montréal), is a key member of Bennett Jones’ national Client & Business Development Team. Reporting to the Senior Manager, Client & Business Development, and working with the Local Managing Partner, and other partners and leadership team members in the Montréal office, this individual will act as a strategic advisor and resource to help identify and pursue opportunities for revenue generation and brand awareness in the Quebec market.

The successful candidate will have a strong knowledge of the Montréal business and legal community and its major industries and can execute a sales strategy, including planning, prospecting and proposal opportunities. The role will also have involvement in planning and developing targeted communications and thought leadership to highlight our expertise in the market, and in the assessment of high value client experience initiatives, all drawing on the resources of the national Client & Business Development team where appropriate. This individual has an ability to operate autonomously, synthesizing the needs and business objectives of the firm at large, the Local Managing Partner and individual lawyers, to deliver differentiated and client-focused business development, marketing and profile building initiatives.

Essential Functions Business Development & Pursuits

  • Support Montréal lawyers and practice teams with their business development planning and execution, including identification and pursuit of opportunities in the Quebec market
  • Working with the Proposals & Pursuits team nationally, assist with, and for French-language submissions, lead the development, writing and editing of proposals, positioning decks and other marketing materials, including articulating the ways in which we sell our Quebec capabilities nationally to existing and prospective clients
  • Ensure the Montréal office and its lawyers are aware of, plugged into and appropriately participating in broader firm initiatives, including content development, Industry Teams (including key industry sponsorships and conferences), Key Client Teams and other significant initiatives, and socialize similar Montréal-specific initiatives to draw on national firm resources to maximize the opportunity
  • Working with the Local Managing Partner and the Montréal leadership team, oversee and ensure adherence to the Montréal office business development budget, and support for other initiatives designed to drive and support collaboration within the firm, client engagement, growth, recruitment and retention

Profile Building & Other Key Tasks (working in conjunction with national Client & Business Development team members)

  • Working with the International Business Development Team – Develop an understanding of the Montréal lawyers’ U.S. and international referral relationships and ensure we are sharing information, coordinating outreach and maximizing these relationships
  • Working with the Events & Client Programs team – Identify, evaluate and make thoughtful recommendations for local events, client seminars, industry sponsorships, association memberships, and other strategic business development initiatives, and help to coordinate required logistical support with colleagues
  • Working with the Marketing, Communications & Brand team – Identify and execute opportunities to build brand awareness and client loyalty in the local market through speaking, publishing or media opportunities. Act as liaison to the Montréal media and public relations market, provide guidance to the Local Managing Partner and lawyers to activate on high value media opportunities, involving national colleagues and resources where appropriate
  • Working with the Business Development Technology team – Help ensure client contact and activity information is tracked and maintained in the firm CRM system (InterAction) and relevant Montréal client experience is captured and profiled in the firm experience management system (Foundation)
  • Working with the Translation team and outside translation providers – Provide support and direction to the firm and to Client & Business Development to optimize our processes around French translation and cross-office information sharing

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or higher, in Business, Communications, PR or related field
  • 7+ years’ experience in business, marketing, or sales in a professional services environment (law firm experience strong asset). Demonstrates a passion for marketing professional services and winning work
  • A strong understanding of the business environment in Montréal and surrounding areas
  • Fully bilingual with oral and written mastery of the French language, with ability to draft compelling proposal content in French
  • Ability to act as a leader in the hybrid environment of a smaller office within a larger law firm, exercising good judgment on when to operate autonomously or in collaboration with team members
  • Strong communications and analytical skills; able to work independently and as a team
  • Must display the highest level of client service and diplomacy. Ability to manage competing and changing priorities and effectively deliver quality work under tight deadlines
  • Excellent computer skills, including proficiency in using Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint. Ability to master new applications and software, such as CRM and project management software, is important
