About the role

Your Opportunity:

Based on location availability, the successful applicant may have the option to work from either our Ponoka or Red Deer office. In your role as Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) – Virtual Opioid Dependency Program (VODP), you will report directly to the Manager, VODP and you will provide a broad range of services primarily focused on supporting clients. Working as part of an inter-disciplinary healthcare team you will practice from a harm reduction, recovery based philosophy. You will act as an extension of the physician, providing direct patient care through virtual technology platforms. You will support clients with the initiation and ongoing treatment of Suboxone or Methadone and have a good understanding of same. Perform rapid nursing assessments and screening to ensure safety and mitigate risks associated with medication management. Prepares prescription renewals and records significant and historical data. Maintains precise electronic records on individual clients’ files. Involved in case management activities for clients such as follow up, treatment, counselling and referrals. Assists physicians with virtual health examinations, scheduling appointments and processing of related orders. Coordinates and provides procedures for urine drug screening including follow up with physicians and clients. Assists patients with community resource linkages such as Addiction Counsellors, Mental Health follow-up, and transition to community care. Ongoing consultation with community pharmacies and monitoring of client medication dosing. Educates clients on non-prescribed drug interactions while on buprenorphine or methadone. Monitors client risk and completes suicide risk screening and assessment as deemed necessary. Contributes in VODP Team meetings, team decisions, policy and procedure manual.

You will be guided by your education, experience, demonstrated skill level and AHS policies and procedures. You will play a key role in providing safe, quality patient and family centered care while reflecting the shared vision and values of AHS.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of an accredited practical nurse education program.

Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta (CLPNA).

Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP).

Additional Required Qualifications:

Excellent knowledge of addictions and mental illness. Must be competent in identifying clients at risk and completing a suicide risk assessment. Knowledge of Suboxone/buprenorphine and Methadone. Advanced computer literacy. Above average keyboarding skills and proficient with computer programs – Outlook, MS Office, Connect Care, ASIST, etc.
