TRIUMF

, Canada's particle accelerator centre. We are a publicly funded, not-for-profit research lab that is a hub for discovery and innovation.

Our mission is to serve as Canada’s particle accelerator centre. We advance isotope science and technology, both fundamental and applied. We collaborate across communities and disciplines, from nuclear and particle physics to the life and material sciences. We discover and innovate, inspire and educate, creating knowledge and opportunity for all.

TRIUMF's diverse community of nearly 600 multidisciplinary researchers, engineers, technicians, tradespeople, staff, and students create a unique incubator for Canadian excellence, as well as a portal to premier global collaborations. Fueling innovation and improving lives, we are committed to accelerating discovery and shaping a better world.

The Health Physicist (HP) works within the Health Physics Group (HPG) and reports to the Health Physics Group Lead (HPG Lead). This position is focused on supporting radiation safety programs through scientific data analysis, computational modelling, and technical assessments to help ensure TRIUMF's compliance with regulatory requirements and internal policies. The HP provides expertise in radiation detection data interpretation, system support, and computational tools to assist with radiation safety operations across TRIUMF.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Perform data analysis and interpretation from fixed and portable radiation detection systems to ensure radiation exposures are maintained ALARA (As Low As Reasonably Achievable).
  • Support radiation safety operations through computational tools and modelling for dosimetry, shielding effectiveness, and system performance.
  • Assist with the design, evaluation, and review of shielding, interlocks, and monitoring systems to enhance radiation safety.
  • Perform dose calculations in the event of actual or potential radiation exposures to personnel (internal or external).
  • Participate in regulatory inspections and internal audits (e.g., CNSC inspections).
  • Maintain and improve procedures and safe work methods to support radiological hazard mitigation and decontamination.
  • Instruct TRIUMF personnel on radiation safety principles, hazards, and regulatory requirements.
  • Generate, review, and contribute to technical documents, including operating procedures, safety notes, safety analysis reports, and other support documentation.
  • Collaborate with research, engineering, and safety personnel to support commissioning and decommissioning activities that meet regulatory standards.
  • Provide technical guidance and support to TRIUMF staff on radiation safety matters.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:

There are no formal supervisory responsibilities associated with this position. Is expected to provide guidance, training and mentorship to more junior employees and co-ordinate and direct activities involving other group members.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

  • Strong knowledge of fundamental nuclear physics principles related to radiation phenomena and accelerator systems and operations.
  • Broad knowledge of nuclear physics theory, radiation phenomena, and core aspects of health physics, including radiation detectors, applied statistics, and scientific computing applications.
  • Working knowledge of gamma spectroscopy and radiation detection systems, including the various types of detectors used in radiation protection programs.
  • Familiarity with radiological principles such as external and internal dosimetry, shielding concepts, and radiation detection techniques.
  • Competence in data recording, management, and analysis, including applied statistics relevant to radiation protection.
  • Proficiency with software packages used for recording, managing, and analyzing radiation monitoring data.
  • Specialized knowledge of radiation and emissions monitoring systems and procedures, including environmental monitoring practices.
  • General understanding of Canadian regulations and policies related to radiation protection, radioactive substances, radiation devices, and environmental protection requirements.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with other disciplines to support effective project outcomes and maintain safety standards.
  • Sound technical writing skills to support the development of procedures, reports, and related safety documentation.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite products. Familiarity with radiation shielding and modeling codes (e.g., MicroShield, MCNP, FLUKA, GEANT4) is desirable.
  • Strong interpersonal, comprehension, interpretation, and communication skills, both verbal and written.

NUCLEAR ENERGY WORKER:

The position requires the incumbent to be trained and designated as a TRIUMF NEW. Training would be provided by TRIUMF.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND YEARS OF EXPERIENCE:

  • M.S. or PhD in Health Physics or a related field is required.
  • Recognition as a registered radiation safety professional by the Canadian Radiation Protection Association is desirable
  • At least 4 years of experience working in either research or radiation safety role at an accelerator facility.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The job may occasionally require the incumbent to sit; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, or crouch.

Work may include entering areas with a potential for exposure to noise, electrical energy, and chemical/radiological hazards.

The job may occasionally require raising an object using the hands and arms.
