Overview
Are you ready to dive into the exciting and innovative world of Engineered Wood? Kadant Carmanah Design has a great opportunity within our Production Team for a well-rounded individual as a Manufacturing Coordinator.
Kadant Carmanah is recognized as a global leader of innovation in the design and manufacture of equipment in the Engineered Wood products industry and is the largest supplier of Stranders used in the production of Oriented Strand Board (OSB) and other wood-based composites.
The Role:
The Manufacturing Coordinator reports to the VP of Operations and works closely with the Continuous Improvement Manager. They provide support to Plant Supervisor, Production Manager, and Purchasing Department to ensure the timely creation and release of job travelers and estimates.
The focus of the incumbent is to meet operational excellence and to strive for the lowest cost of manufacturing, consistent with quality and delivery to provide the company with a competitive advantage.
The main challenge of this position is to become thoroughly familiar with the production methods, design, designer’s specifications, customer specifications and to determine what manufacturing procedures will be required to meet these needs. The incumbent must work with mechanical shops and technical personnel, developing detailed work instructions, procedures and time standards for the manufacture of equipment.
To be successful in this job, the incumbent must be alert, self-disciplined, and possess the ability to communicate well with people.
Responsibilities

Issue, develop, maintain, and revise job travelers through the review of engineering drawings and required manufacturing methods. Includes creation of Bills of Material (BOM) and Method of Operation (MOO) using Epicor MRP software

Collaborate with our unionized employees to develop and update detailed work instructions for various production processes. Ensure work instructions are clear, concise, and easily understood by all team members

Responsible for the generation of cost estimates for labor and material, and the generation of “As Solds” for full product lines. Includes cost estimates of repair work and subcontracted work.

Accountable for timely ongoing reporting of cost variations from estimate and standard to actual costs including purchases, subcontract and labour. Includes development and reporting of KPI’s

Lead continuous improvement projects with the goal of meeting operational excellence. Main focus on employee engagement, optimizing processes, increasing efficiency, reducing costs, quality assurance, and meeting high safety standards.

Through effective written and oral communication, ensure that major problems, both current and potential, are brought to management’s attention, with appropriate suggestions for corrective action, immediately as situation arises

Maintain knowledge of the latest best practices and trends to improve operational efficiency

Become thoroughly familiar with KCD parts, design, designer’s specifications, and customer’s specifications to best determine processes and procedures. Recommend changes of design to the Engineering department to achieve cost reductions and operational efficiencies
Qualifications
- Experience working in a manufacturing shop environment
- Proven experience in continuous improvement and process optimization
- Certification in and a strong understanding of Lean, Six Sigma, and other process improvement tools and methodologies
- Ability to create clear and concise documentation
- Experienced working effectively with unionized staff
- Commitment to continuous improvement and operational excellence
- Strong Experience with MRP systems and experience in Epicor an asset
- Demonstrated ability to multi-task and prioritize in order to meet the demands of a fast-paced operations/manufacturing environment
- Ideal candidate will possess strong technical acumen, a hands on approach and an interest with how things work
- Strong communication and teamwork skills
- Experience in project management and taking on leadership roles in projects
- Must possess strong computer skills, with expertise in Excel and MS Office suite
- Education in Operations/Supply Chain/Inventory fields of study with Operations Management Program diploma or certificates an asset
- Minimum of 2 years experience in a Manufacturing focused role
- Hands on experience and comfortable using shop tools and equipment (table/vertical saws, nail/staple guns, etc.)
- Experience with MRP systems and/or inventory systems with strong data acquisition methodology and KPI development and reporting experience
