Department Information

The Northwest Territories Legislative Assembly is one of the three distinct and autonomous branches of the Government of the Northwest Territories (Legislative, Executive and Judicial). As such, it operates with autonomy and independence from Cabinet direction and the public service at large. This independence is critical to the mandate of the Legislative Assembly to scrutinize and approve legislation and budgets proposed by cabinet, monitor and critique the activities and performance of the executive branch and provide a forum for the exercise of responsible parliamentary democracy in the Northwest Territories.

Job Information

As the Deputy Language Commissioner you work to ensure the rights, status and privileges of each official languages are respected and protected. The work is done by working collaboratively with GNWT departments and making impartial recommendations for change or improvements. The NWT is home to eleven official languages which include: Chipewyan, Cree, English, Gwich'in, French, Inuinnaqtun, Inuktitut, Inuvialuktun, North Slavey, South Slavey, & Tlicho.

Critical Knowledge, Skills and Abilities.

  • Knowledge of colonial history including the loss of Indigenous languages and the intergenerational trauma caused by residential schools.
  • Knowledge of the many dialects and linguistic variations of Indigenous Languages within the NWT.
  • Knowledge of the Official Languages Act and the ability to apply and interpret legislation.
  • Ability to exercise empathy, active listening, tact and diplomacy with clients in a wide range of circumstances and with a wide range of communication abilities.
  • Cultural awareness and sensitivity, understanding of trauma-informed approaches, and ability to communicate courteously and effectively with and provide services to people with diverse abilities, experiences and challenges, and personal crisis.
  • Ability to deliver training and presentations to large and small groups with diverse interests and needs, and to manage group dynamics.

Typically attained by

A degree in Social Sciences, Indigenous Studies or related field combined with two (2) years of experience that includes interpreting and applying legislation and communicating about legal or technical issues in plain language, and conflict resolution and/or a frontline public service, customer service, complaints resolution or similar role interacting with the general public.

Equivalencies may include

  • A diploma in Social Sciences, Indigenous Studies or related field combined with three (3) years of experience that includes interpreting and applying legislation and communicating about legal or technical issues in plain language, and conflict resolution and/or a frontline public service, customer service, complaints resolution or similar role interacting with the general public.
  • Ten (10) years¿ experience interpreting and applying legislation and communicating about legal or technical issues in plain language; and two (2) years of experience in conflict resolution and/or frontline public service, customer service, complaints resolution or similar role interacting with the general public.

This position is located in Hay River, NT, but remote work may be considered for applicants living in NWT communities on a case-by-case basis
