What you can expect from this position: Reporting to the Division Chief, Training Coordinator, this position works directly with vocational students at FESTI and routinely makes an impact on the training of emergency service departments who come to our school for various training opportunities. FESTI is a fast-paced Private Career College that is well respected in firefighting, emergency services, and corporate training. FESTI is well known for its preservice vocational programs, as well we train clients from around the world. We are looking for someone with a passion for learning, understanding of adult learning principles, and a drive for coaching students and part-time instructors to be successful.

As Instructor/Captain, Fire Services, you will:

  • Oversee various vocational training programs as a program owner you will be expected to:
  • Maintain course schedules
  • Mentor and lead part-time instructors and student mentors
  • Plan training skill stations and set up equipment
  • Oversee daily instruction of students
  • Provide feedback to students, mentors, and instructors as required
  • Speak at graduations and events as required
  • Develop content as required
  • Develop learning tools as assigned
  • Preview staff schedules and align to skill requirements
  • Deliver training in various programs as required and scheduled
  • Maintain safety on training grounds, following all safety plans and policies
  • Follow lesson plans, skill sheets, and testing requirements during training
  • Assist with training of Emergency Services staff
  • Leverage project management skills to aid in development of new courses
  • Follow the ADDIE process to analyze training requests and complete gap analysis; develop and maintain course curriculum and training aids for all training programs; research trends and developments to improve effectiveness of training; provide quality control for instruction, testing, maintenance of programs; guidance of remedial or corrective action required because of monitoring
  • Assist in the development of a Learning Culture at FESTI

This Association position is classified at the “Captain” level, with an annual salary $120,908.99, based on a 37.5 hour work week.

This is the role for you, if you have:

  • Post-Secondary School or Technical school diploma/certificate - or will possess an equivalent combination of training, education, and experience to indicate full ability to cover all aspects of this position
  • NFPA 1041 – Level I, as a Fire Service Instructor or Adult Education certification Preference given to NFPA 1041 – Level II, or a degree in education.
  • Ability to obtain a valid Ontario DZ driver license
  • Ability to obtain “D/A” AVOP licence
  • Ability to obtain and retain Transportation Security Clearance

The knowledge and skills you bring, that set you up for success:

  • Proficient knowledge and practical experience with respect to facilitating classroom and virtual training programs using all tools necessary for a comprehensive learning experience (facilitator guide, power points presentation, Prezi, Zoom, Microsoft Teams, webinar, virtual whiteboard, job aid, videos, etc.)
  • Proven ability to evaluate delivery of training programs and/or presentations and provide timely feedback with a comprehensive development plan including specifics of learning materials, expected outcomes, and follow up evaluation date
  • Strong knowledge of Accreditation /OFM Endorsement processes, proficient with eLearning software, experience in video editing would be an asset
  • Proficient in computer skills including keyboarding skills; Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Office 365 (OneNote, OneDrive, Groups, Teams)
  • Exemplary written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills, ability to mentor, problem solve, lead change, show initiative, be a self starter, solution oriented, dependable, work well in pressure situations, ability to prioritize, effective in leading and influencing people, exercising good judgment and being adaptable to a changing environment
  • Experience developing adult learning courses, programs, e-learning, would be beneficial
  • Ability to be a team- player who can also work independently
