Job Profile
We are looking for one (1) Part-Time Security Guard to join the Municipal By-law Compliance and Corporate Security Division in the Planning & Growth Department available immediately. Reporting to the Security Supervisor, the following duties will apply.
What you will be doing
- Monitors and patrols assigned areas of City owned and/or operated properties and the surrounding grounds through physical patrols and by monitoring various security systems.
- Observes, investigates, and acts on possible breaches of security, criminal code violations, fire and safety hazards, illegal entry, theft, and malfunction or interruption of utilities, machinery or equipment.
- Records and maintains log books of daily activities and unusual or special occurrences.
- Activates and responds to fire alarm and safety systems and assists in evacuation procedures; escorts designated authorities, police, fire and paramedic personnel to emergency locations.
- Assigns daily pass and /or temporary cards. Provides access to authorized visitors i.e. contractors, guests.
- Supports the enforcement of various By-Laws, Acts, City policies and procedures including the Trespass to Property Act.
- Responds to urgent and potentially volatile situations and takes appropriate action related to members of the public and City employees.
- Resolves conflict situations including staff and general public complaints and disputes.
- Responds to public inquiries and represents the City by promoting security services that contribute positively to the results of the division, and corporate vision.
- Escorts or physically removes offenders and trespassers from City owned/operated properties under the Trespass to Property Act of Ontario.
- Monitors CCTV footage at security desk.
- Standing, walking or sitting for long periods in both indoor and outdoor conditions.
- Prepares notes and incident reports relating to unusual occurrences, detailing observations and actions taken.
- Complies with all applicable requirements contained in the Private Security and Investigative Services Act, 2005.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Education
Two-year College Diploma in Law and Security, Police Foundations or equivalent. Possession of and the ability to maintain a valid Security Guard Licence in accordance with the Ontario Private Security and Investigative Services Act, 2005, S.O. 2005, c. 34.
Experience and Knowledge
Six (6) months to one (1) year experience in the following:

Knowledge of City By-laws and relevant legislation.

Knowledge of proper investigation procedures to ensure that incidents are properly handled and documented.

Highly developed interpersonal and customer service skills including conflict resolution, problem solving, decision making and situational awareness.

Communication skills to advise the public of violations, providing assistance and direction.
-
Experienced and able to operate and monitor computerized security software including access control systems, CCTV Systems, intrusion alarm systems and duress response systems.
-
Demonstrated ability to prepare clear, concise and legible notebook entries and detailed security incident reports.

Good organizational and time management skills to prioritize workload.
-
Evidence collection, court decorum and testimony.
-
A valid Ontario Class G driver’s licence in good standing, with a driver’s abstract acceptable to the City (4 or less demerit points may be considered acceptable).

Worker Health and Safety Awareness Training certificate from the Ministry of Labour. (may be obtained post offer)
Current and valid Police Criminal Record and Judicial Matters Check to be provided prior to commencement in this position.
Valid G driver's license.
Your compensation
This position is within Grade 6 of the inside workers union Salary Schedule and has an hourly range of $36.40 - $38.70. We offer a comprehensive benefit package and are an Ontario Municipal Employees Retirement System (OMERS) employer.
Hours of work
The hours of work are ten (10) hour rotating shifts, not exceeding twenty (20) hours per week. Shifts include days, afternoons and nights from Monday to Sunday. Regular hours of work and shifts are subject to change at the discretion of the Supervisor.
