Health and Safety Coordinator
Nature Fresh Farms is a Leamington-based greenhouse company with facilities in Leamington, ON and Delta, OH as well as Laredo, TX. We are currently looking to fill a permanent, full-time positionfor a Health and Safety Coordinator for our Human Resources Department at our Leamington, ON location.
The Health & Safety Coordinator is a hands-on role that works cross-functionally with the H&S Specialist, the HR team, management and employees at all levels to promote a positive safety culture. They will ensure H&S practices, training and audits are implemented and followed consistently across all areas, as well as ensuring that any employee safety issues are handled promptly and fairly.
Job Specific Duties
- Assists in ensuring that the health and safety plans, policies, programs, and procedures are followed including compliance with the Ministry of Labour.
- Conducts training sessions with employees on Forklift (theory). Lockout/tagout, working at heights, H&S policies, legislative requirements, best practices, and other H&S training as required.
- Collaborates with the H&S Manager and Specialist to develop and assist with implementing new initiatives.
- Supports the H&S Specialists with creating and updating training materials. Updates employee training records for all training completed through HSI and ADP.
- Provides prompt response and support to emergency situations, as necessary.
- Thoroughly investigates accidents, incidents, near misses, etc., and responds appropriately through communication, training, and follow-up with supervisors and employees. Also works with management to identify and put remedies in place to prevent future accidents or injuries.
- Administers the return-to-work and modified work programs, working closely with the H&S Manager, Human Resources, the employee(s), their Managers/Supervisors, and WSIB to ensure a safe and timely return to work.
- Submits all WSIB claims and works with the H&S Manager and WSIB on any complex claims, disputes, or appeals. Provides guidance and liaises where appropriate, ensuring yearly rebates are obtained.
- Organizes and schedules monthly facility inspections through Provision. Actively participates in inspections and risk assessments with the goal of reducing/addressing risks and ensuring compliance.
- Supports and serves as a member of the Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC). In collaboration with the H&S Manager, prepares materials and administers the JHSC meetings.
- Provides support to the H&S Specialist as needed for all continuous improvement projects.
- Continuation of learning and development through extra-curricular courses.
- Helps maintain all H&S programs by actively working within the H&S Hub and collaborating with the H&S team. Ensures document control by following internal H&S processes.
- Participates in an on-call rotation schedule to address any after-hours H&S concerns or incidents.
- Transports workers to appointments during and after work hours when necessary.
- Must comply with all Health and Safety, Food Safety, Bio Security, and Nature Fresh Policies and Procedures.

Qualifications
- A minimum of 3 years of hands-on health and safety experience in either a production facility or agriculture is an asset.
- Solid knowledge of OHSA, WSIB, and health and safety legislation and regulations.
- Knowledge of safety laws, health & safety best practices, workplace hazards, and control measures.
- First Aid and CPR certifications are a must.
- Able to build positive relationships, have a collaborative working style, and the ability to explain safety programs/processes to employees in an understandable manner.
- Able to work cross-functionally with employees at all levels.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities across multiple sites, with strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to influence, implement, and improve systems and processes; enforce standards and procedures; minimize non-conformance of standards; and demonstrate strong follow-through.
- Strong skills in documentation, report writing, and efficient document maintenance.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Good team player with a positive attitude; flexible, adaptable, compassionate, and assertive yet fair.
- Good computer skills with Windows applications, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
- Spanish is an asset
- Valid driver’s license and use of personal vehicle are required.
Working Conditions
- Works with a wide array of people in a team setting, including HR, management, local and offshore workers, contractors, etc.
- Works in an office setting with travel between greenhouses, warehouses, bunkhouses and office locations.
- The greenhouse and warehouse environments may be hot, humid, moist or cold at any time of the year. During cleanout, the greenhouse will be dusty.
- May be exposed to pests while working in the greenhouse.
- Works Monday-Friday, an average of 44-45 hours/week. After-hours and rotational on-call duties are required. Flexibility with work schedule is essential.
Physical Requirements
- Involves a combination of walking, bending, and sitting throughout the day
- Must be able to complete all physical requirements of the job with or without a reasonable accommodation.
