The Lower Mainland Biomedical Engineering (LMBME) consolidated group under Providence Health Care is currently accepting applications for a full-time Precision Instrumentation Machinist to join our team.

Please note that this is a temporary position until June 2026 or the return of the incumbent.

What You Will Do The Precision Instrumentation Machinist is part of an integrated Biomedical Engineering team, which provides services in support of the safe, efficient and effective utilization of medical technology across Fraser Health, Providence Health Care, Provincial Health Services Authority and Vancouver Coastal Health (collectively, the “Organizations“). Duties include performing skilled journeyman work related to the maintenance, creation, fabrication, repair and modification of a variety of surgical instrumentation, mechanical medical equipment and related accessories. The position also performs duties such as creating working drawings (CAD/CAM) from samples, interpreting engineering drawings and operating milling machinery, reviewing work requests, gathering information and consulting with other LMBME team members, clinical areas and vendors, participating in risk management and quality improvement activities, equipment evaluation and inspection, inventory control, and maintenance of records.

Your duties will include

• Maintaining and Repairing Surgical Equipment Calibrating, inspecting, adjusting, sharpening, and repairing surgical instruments and mechanical medical equipment to ensure optimal performance and safety.
• Custom Fabrication and Machining Designing and fabricating custom parts or modifications using CNC and conventional milling machines, lathes, grinders, and welding tools; interpreting engineering drawings and creating CAD/CAM files when needed.
• Collaborating and Problem Solving Working closely with Biomedical Engineering Technologists, clinical staff, and vendors to assess project needs, source materials, recommend solutions, and install or modify equipment across multiple sites.
• Documentation, Safety, and Quality Improvement Maintaining accurate records, supporting risk management and quality improvement activities, monitoring inventory, and contributing to equipment evaluation and purchasing decisions.
• Certificate of Apprenticeship or Trades Qualification Certificate as a journeyman Machinist recognized by the Province of B.C. Two years' recent, related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

LMBME acts as the technology resource and manages medical devices throughout their entire life cycle; starting from the planning for purchase and development of specifications stage, through the purchasing, implementation, maintenance, and finally, end of life and disposition stage. LMBME's 190+ technologists support more than 100,000 medical devices spread across 27 major hospitals and additional sites such as correctional facilities, dialysis units, etc.

LMBME also plays a key role in technology management related to patient safety. It conducts medical equipment incident investigations, monitors medical equipment recalls and alerts, and al technology.

Your Day to Day

• Maintains mechanical medical equipment and surgical instruments such as graspers, cutting instruments, osteotomes, endoscopes and retractors by performing duties such as calibrating, inspecting, adjusting, sharpening, and repairing units to ensure optimal condition in accordance with departmental standards.
• Reviews work requests and consults with Clinical Engineers, Biomedical Engineering Technologists, clinical areas, and outside vendors to determine project needs. Plans, designs, sources, and purchases materials needed to complete custom projects. Occasional travel to sites within LMBME to perform above duties as well as installation of modified or manufactured parts and equipment. Offer assistance in recommending alternative solutions to complete projects.
• Programs, operates and maintains machine shop equipment such as CNC and conventional milling machines, lathes, grinders, drill presses, welders (TIG) and hand tools to perform duties such as modifying, straightening, sharpening, soldering, welding, and replacing parts of surgical devices including cutting and precision instruments.
• Maintains records of work completed by performing duties such as recording maintenance and repair activities and documenting equipment status. Compiles information for submission to appropriate staff for costing purposes and to determine replacement needs.
• Participates in a variety of risk management and quality improvement activities to enhance and ensure the safety of patients and staff by performing duties such as maintaining tools and equipment in good working order, picking up debris, and keeping work area and lab tidy. Identifies hazards and advises supervisor as required when deficiencies are observed.
• Participates in an inventory control program by performing duties such as identifying depleted stock, completing and forwarding purchase requisitions for signature. Receives and restocks shipments of supplies in appropriate area.
• Performs modifications to equipment and instruments and/or fabricates items such as replacement parts by performing duties such as creating working drawings (CAD/CAM) from samples, interpreting engineering drawings and operating milling machinery to meet requirements for parts and equipment not available on the market or where deemed appropriate to reduce costs or downtime.
• Communicates with designated personnel such as purchasing, sterile supply and operating room staff via email, telephone, and in person by performing duties such as receiving calls for repair and pick up, sourcing, placing and following up on orders to ensure requirements and priorities are met.
• Participates in the purchase of surgical instrumentation by performing duties such as notifying designated staff of status of current equipment, assisting with the evaluation of equipment for purchase, perform initial inspections and maintaining familiarity with current techniques and technologies pertinent to the industry to ensure the facility acquires the optimal instruments and related supplies.
• Transports equipment to and from appropriate locations such as operating rooms and Sterile Supply Department as required.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.
