The Ministry of Government Relations oversees Saskatchewan’s system of municipal government and is seeking a dynamic leader with vision, creativity and ability to provide strategic direction for provincial planning legislation in a one-year term starting August 1, 2025, as the Acting Director of Regional Planning and Provincial Interests.

Reporting to the Executive Director of Community Planning, the successful candidate will lead the Regional and Provincial Interest unit where the priorities are to manage Saskatchewan's land use planning framework, facilitate provincial priorities for community growth and development, encourage inter-community and regional co-operation on land use planning matters and provide education and training to clients on community and land use planning matters. The successful candidate will provide direction, leadership and management for a team of professional staff to strengthen municipal planning and development capacity.

You will be responsible for:

  • Lead the implementation of legislation, regulations and policy related to land use planning, zoning and subdivision development;
  • Build relationships with municipalities, First Nation and Métis communities and industry to advance Saskatchewan's Growth Plan;
  • Lead consultations, develop strategies and approaches for the comprehensive review, revision and drafting of legislation, regulations and policy;
  • lead the integration of the Statements of Provincial Interest Regulations and effectively collaborate on provincial priorities for economic growth and sustainable development within local development activities;
  • Lead regional, inter-community and municipal planning efforts to address growth and development opportunities and challenges;
  • Facilitate the development of policy and advice for senior management and represent the ministry in sector-wide and government-wide activities to advance community planning; and,
  • Deliver educational workshops, training programs and website materials on community planning and land development processes to facilitate growth, development and professional capacity.

Typically, the knowledge, skills and abilities required for this position will be obtained by the completion of a degree in rural/urban/regional planning or a related field, combined with land use planning and policy experience at a provincial, regional or municipal level. You will also possess or be eligible for a license as a Registered Professional Planner (RPP) from the Saskatchewan Professional Planners Institute or equivalent licensing body and possess or be eligible for Professional membership in the Canadian Institute of Planners.
