About the role

A leading public fintech company is seeking an experienced Product Counsel with payments experience to assist their payments product teams in Canada. This is a full-time (40 hours per week), fully-remote, contract role for an initial 9-month term. A Canadian law license is required for this role, though it is open to anyone residing in the US or Canada.

Duration: 5 Months (May - September 2025)

Pay Rate: $90 - $115 / hr ($180,000 - $230,000 annualized)

Role Responsibilities:

With the passage and upcoming implementation of the Retail Payments Activities Act (RPAA) in Canada, a resource is required with Canadian law expertise to directly advise internal BNPL (buy now pay later) and payments clients on product and regulatory work. This role will provide legal advice to Product teams as it relates to the company's BNPL offerings in CA including, with respect to:

  • Reviewing and advising on frameworks, policies and processes to comply with RPAA.
  • Advising on implementation of IDV requirements on customers to address MAP requirements.
  • Advising on implementation of FCAC Consumer Driven Regs.
  • Providing guidance on how to allow merchants usage of BNPL products embedded within e-commerce websites and mobile applications
  • Providing legal advice associated with res-equencing and optimizing the self-serve onboarding by deferring bank checks to after the first transaction to reduce time to onboard.
  • Provide product management regulatory support, including license maintenance and responding to regulatory requests.
  • Providing ongoing product (and potentially regulatory) legal support for BNPL and payments products in Canada. This includes drafting and revising terms of use and other disclaimers, reviewing wireframes and flows, advising on product specific issues and other regulatory issues and providing support for regulatory required provisions (e.g. disputes, complaints, etc.)

Experience:

  • 6+ years
  • Canadian licensed lawyer
  • Significant payments experience
  • Experience in consumer laws, rules and regulations
  • Preferred product counsel experience
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
