RESEARCH ASSISTANT 2
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Department of Mining and Materials Engineering at McGill University is seeking a highly motivated and skilled part-time Research Assistant 2 to assist the Research Supervisor in conducting research projects. This position involves preparing a dynamic simulation framework that represents the Canadian Iron Ore value chain (programmed using Rockwell Arena software) and refining an iron ore pricing prediction tool.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Reviews the current simulation model, which may require some training in the Rockwell Arena
- Prepare technical documentation comparing Agent-Based Simulation and Discrete Event Simulation, in the context of iron ore
- Ensure proper functioning of the iron ore pricing tool, to the extent that it can be accepted as a tool within the iron ore industry
- Prepare documentation describing the integration of the iron ore pricing tool within the dynamic simulation
Qualifications:
- Possesses a Master’s Degree in Mining or Materials Engineering, or other related field
- Strong expertise with programming skills in VBA and Python
- Strong comprehension of Discrete Event Simulation, ideally using the Arena Software
- Familiarity with the iron ore industry, as well as a basic understanding of ironmaking and steelmaking processes, including blast furnaces, basic oxygen furnaces, electric arc furnaces and technology for Directly Reducing Iron
- Excellent written and oral communication skills;
- Open to learning domain-specific aspects of the iron and steel industry;
- Well-organized and self-motivated
- Understanding of basic funding instruments, such as the Mitacs Accelerate program, is a plus.
