Position Details
The English Language Institute is seeking a Summer Programs English Language Instructors for a casual contract for August 2025. University of Lethbridge International’s English Language Institute offers a variety of English Language programs for both students who study English as an additional language or English for Academic Purposes, as well as domestic students looking to make connections through tutoring and language partnerships.
The Summer Programs English Language Instructor is responsible for delivering language classes to Japanese university students visiting Canada and the University of Lethbridge for three to six weeks during their summer holidays. Within a framework of instruction devised, provided, and updated by the ELI, the Summer Programs English Language Instructor prepares lesson plans, delivers prepared lessons, and evaluates students’ work and participation. Through the performance of their duties, the Summer Programs English Language Instructor is expected to develop students’ general language proficiency, the type of language students need for communication in social and workplace settings outside of the classroom, and academic language proficiency, the language skills and abilities students need to acquire and use knowledge in a post-secondary setting. Within their classrooms, the Summer Programs English Language Instructor is also expected to create opportunities for cultural learning, increase students’ awareness of diversity and global perspectives, and establish and maintain a supportive, respectful, welcoming, and collaborative environment.
Reporting directly to the Manager, English Language Institute, the Summer Programs English Language Instructor will be required to:
- Teach language classes following prepared lesson plans.
- Prepare lesson plans in accordance with the relevant program framework, curriculum documents, and department policies, procedures, and methods.
- Evaluate and provide feedback on students’ in-class work, homework, assignments, and tests.
- Support individual student learning needs outside of scheduled classroom time through in-person meetings, email, phone, and other modes and forms of communication.
- Carry out administrative and record-keeping tasks associated with teaching and assessment (e.g., progress reports, attendance, grades) in a timely fashion.
- Participate in ELI Activity Program events as required.
- Participate in University, Department, and Unit meetings as required.
- Some online instruction may be required.
The wage will be $36.00 per hour.
Position Qualifications
The position requires:

A minimum of an undergraduate degree from an accredited post-secondary institution, but preferably a graduate degree in TESOL, Linguistics, Education, or a related discipline.

At least one year of teaching English as a second language, ideally in a post-secondary context, is required.
