About the role

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Intermediate Accountant Northern Mat & Bridge will assist in the preparation of timely and accurate financial statement working papers and provide support to the payroll team to ensure the timely and accurate administration of employee payroll, related filings and reporting.

This role requires a professional with experience in a variety of accounting and analytical tasks related to month-end close, intercompany reconciliations, balance sheet reconciliations and sales tax combined with assisting in payroll administration. The ideal candidate is a critical thinker who utilizes their analytical and communication skills to create accurate and timely results.

KEY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY & ASSOCIATED DUTIES

Accounting

  • Reconcile accounts, including bank accounts in a timely manner.

  • Prepare month end accruals and related documentation.

  • Prepare month end, quarter end, year-end journal entries with accompanying analysis and support.

  • Prepare certain month working papers in support of entity financial statements.

  • Assist with general ledger and chart of account oversight and maintenance.

  • Research and resolve variances in a timely manner.

  • Participate in the development and maintenance of process documents to support accounting functions.

  • Comply with internal controls and processes.

  • Prepare intercompany and elimination entries for various intercompany transactions.

  • Sales tax analysis, processing, filing, and payments.

  • Prepare and support the provision of audit and tax deliverables to the internal and external tax preparers and auditors.

  • Work with staff and management across departments to build strong relationships to create an efficient and effective operating environment.

  • Regularly offer process improvement ideas, share best practices, and facilitate standardization among divisions.

  • Utilize financial data to identify trends, variances, and opportunities for operational enhancements.

  • Provide backup and support as needed to the team.

  • Other ad hoc duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Payroll

  • Payroll data

o Ensuring timely collection of payroll data from different sources and reviewing prior to processing.

  • Payroll processing

o Weekly, bi-weekly, and semi-monthly payroll processing.

o Reconciling reports and resolving discrepancies.

o Processing, filing, and payments of source deductions.

o Distribution of paystubs and management of employee portals

JOB REQUIREMENTS

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • 2+ years of progressive accounting experience, preferably in a dynamic environment. Experience with process improvement initiatives is highly desirable.

  • Experience working as part of a team of 3 or more.

  • Experience with ERP systems (Dynamics NAV preferred, Great Plains, Microsoft F&O, NetSuite, or SAP).

  • Experience with payroll systems such as Ceridian/Dayforce (preferred), ADP or Sylogist is considered an asset.

  • Experience with ERP or system transitions is considered an asset.

  • Intermediate to advanced excel skills required.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

  • Post-secondary education in accounting or finance

  • Interest in, or pursuing, a CPA designation would be an asset

  • Ability to work with a diverse and hybrid team. Some members are in Grande Prairie, AB and some in Orangeville, ON.

  • Strong communication skills, ability to collaborate across functions and geographies.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

  • Problem-solver and self-starter who can source information, recommend enhancements, or resolve discrepancies independently.

  • Analytical and critical thinker who can work with large volumes of data.

  • Ability and willingness to travel would be considered an asset.

  • Strong attention to detail with exceptional organizational skills.

REPORTS TO: Controller, Western Canada

  • Internal: Sales, Operations, and HR departments

  • External: Parent Company, Auditors, Consultants, Contractors, government agencies, unions, IT service providers.
