About the role

Research Assistants are normally students, in a University of Winnipeg undergraduate program, employed to assist with tasks related to research. Work is performed within defined guidelines and under supervision of a more senior researcher or faculty member.

Position Overview:

Maintenance of C. elegans strains to support a research project into potential drugs to treat human disease.

Duties:

  • Prepare sterile media.
  • Inoculate media with E. coli.
  • Transfer nematode worms from plates to new plates.
  • Check for contamination and viability.

Qualifications:

  • Third year of higher in Biology or Biochemistry BSc. program.
  • Must have taken Microorganisms and Disease.
  • Preferably have taken Genetics and Intermediate Biochemistry.
  • Aseptic technique.
  • Use of autoclave, biological safety cabinet, balance, pH meter, dissecting microscope, compound microscope.
  • General laboratory safety training and laboratory procedures.
  • Good eyesight and hand-eye coordination.
  • Ability to keep a good laboratory journal.

Condition(s) of Employment:

  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.

The period of work will be from June 30, 2025 - August 30, 2025 and the estimated total hours of work will be 20-100 hours.
