The Town of Hanover is recruiting a reliable, self-motivated equipment operator to join the Public Works team in the position of Landfill Site & Public Works Operator. This role is ideal for someone who works well independently, takes pride in maintaining safe and efficient operations, thrives working outdoors, and enjoys providing a valuable service to members of the community.
Reporting to the Public Works Foreman, responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Operating a compactor and loader as well as other equipment as required to organize and cover waste, maintain the Hanover/Walkerton Landfill site overall, and maintain access roads and disposal areas
- Providing backup services to operate the landfill scale and process payments
- Operating equipment such as snow plow, truck, backhoe, loader and sidewalk machine for maintenance of town infrastructure
- Assisting other departments with maintenance and repair of infrastructure
- Completing circle checks on vehicles and equipment, adding fluids/oil, lubricating equipment and performing minor maintenance and repairs
- Completing logs of operation at landfill site as per municipal and/or landfill procedures and Ministry requirements.
- Maintaining cleanliness and organization of the landfill site, including advising customers of proper sorting of materials and ensuring no scavenging of materials.
- Responding to and resolving complaints and inquiries from the public, or escalating issues as required.
- Ensuring departmental functions are completed with the utmost regard for health and safety
- Participating in a rotating on-call schedule, including carrying a cell phone for 24hr response and performing daily checks

Knowledge, Skills & Experience
- Valid Ontario ‘DZ’ license in good standing is required
- Experience operating equipment is required
- Previous landfill operations experience is an asset
- Valid Standard First Aid/CPR Certification an asset
- Strong mechanical, communication, customer service and teamwork skills
- Thorough working knowledge of equipment operations and maintenance procedures, Occupational Health and Safety Act, WHMIS, relevant legislation/guidelines/policies and procedures, labour relations, and the local community
- Must be capable of and comfortable with working independently in outdoor conditions
- Must be physically capable of carrying out bona fide occupational responsibilities of the role in varying working conditions
- Must be willing and able to work weekdays and weekends dependent upon hours of operation (currently Tuesday to Saturday)
- Must be willing and able to participate in a rotating on-call schedule, including carrying a cell phone for 24hr response and performing daily checks.
Remuneration, pension, and benefits package as per the current CUPE Local 255.09 Collective Agreement.
