The Department of Community Health Sciences in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Research Assistant. This Part-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 6 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

Reporting to the Principal Investigator.

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Lead the preparation of ethics application for a cancer research project by supporting protocol development and managing ongoing communications between the research team and the ethics office
  • Under the general supervision and direction of the Principal Investigator, performs data cleaning, data extractions, data analyses and data management
  • Accurate and timely analysis of results in accordance with project objectives and deliverables
  • Clear and accurate database-related documentation outlining steps performed in the extraction, cleaning and analysis
  • Perform moderate complex functions successfully with minimal direction
  • Write and trouble-shoot R (preferred), Stata, Python, or SAS codes with minimal direction
  • Identify and correct errors, and validate output and results
  • Perform and interpret basic (Chi-square, t-tests, Mann Whitney tests, etc.) and advanced analyses (logistic regression, competing risks/multi-state modelling, mixed-effect modelling, handling right-censored data, etc)
  • Learn and support new statistical/machine learning methods to better address research objectives
  • Resourceful, innovative, and creative problem-solving
  • Require flexibility and the ability to handle change with ease
  • Establishes and maintains effective, productive relationships with staff, peers, and collaborators
  • Compile tables, charts, graphs, and summarized statistics for integration in research papers and reports. This includes materials for presentation and publication
  • Complete other research tasks as requested by the research team

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Master's Degree in Epidemiology, Health Services Research, Biostatistics, Public Health or other quantitative areas
  • A combination of education and experience will be considered
  • Experience with administrative data assets available in Alberta and Canada (e.g., DAD, NACRS, physician claims) is an asset
  • Knowledge of University of Calgary and Alberta Health Services policies on privacy and confidentiality and research data management is an asset
  • Knowledge or prior experience of applying for ethics for cancer-related research projects at the University of Calgary and Alberta Health Services is a strong asset
  • Knowledge of health economics analyses (costing, cost-effectiveness, and budget impact analyses) is a strong asset
  • Prior experience with machine learning using R and/or other types of AI techniques is an asset
  • Advanced skills in statistical software programs (eg. R, SAS, STATA, Python)
  • Intermediate to advanced skills in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint) and EndNote
  • Excellent interpersonal skills. Demonstrated ability to productively work with a multi-disciplinary team
  • Ability to problem solve in complex situations
  • Strong attention to detail is critical
  • Demonstrated strong written and oral communication skills. Ability to prepare clear, well-written reports and documentation of analytic processes
