About the role

Are you an accomplished finance professional seeking a pivotal role in managing significant investment portfolios? The City of Edmonton is looking for a dedicated Portfolio Manager, Fixed Income to oversee an internal bond portfolio valued at approximately $1.0 billion. This critical position contributes to the success of our broader $2.0 billion fixed income portfolios, forming a key function within the City of Edmonton's overall $3.5 billion investment program. Beyond day-to-day portfolio management, this dynamic role also encompasses engaging in strategic planning and special projects initiated by City Council or other City departments, offering a unique opportunity to provide high-level financial direction across the organization. What Will You Do

  • Manage and trade an internal bond portfolio, primarily focusing on one valued at approximately $1.0 billion
  • Stay updated on daily economic and corporate news to inform investment decisions
  • Conduct intensive research and analysis on numerous security issuers to identify investment opportunities
  • Forecast interest rate and credit spread movements to optimize portfolio performance
  • Collaborate with and support other Portfolio Managers within the Investment Management Section
  • Propose investment strategies for internally managed fixed income portfolios and contribute to the City's overall investment program
  • Contribute significantly to the investment earnings of various City funds
  • Maintain the City of Edmonton's approved list of bond investments, ensuring institutions meet stringent standards
  • Work collaboratively with other Investment Management Section members to foster a high-performing team
  • Possess a strong understanding of Canadian fixed income markets and settlement conventions

Qualifications:

  • University Degree in Commerce with a major in Finance
  • Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation
  • Minimum 7 years of experience acquired through working in an investment operation of a large municipality, corporation or investment management firm

Assets:

  • MBA or Master’s degree

Skills required for success:

  • Comprehensive understanding of financial management, capital markets, securities analysis, and portfolio management
  • Proficiency in accounting principles, practices, and relevant computer systems for investment management
  • Strong analytical capabilities to develop effective investment policies and strategies for the City
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for interacting with various internal and external stakeholders, coupled with a high degree of initiative and independence

Conditions of employment and work environment:

  • Up to: 1 permanent full-time position
  • Hours of work: 36.9 hours per week, Monday - Friday
  • Salary: $105,668.31 - $132,083.94 (Annually). This role offers a competitive base salary, plus a market adjustment, along with a variable pay component linked to performance targets (Interested candidates are asked to provide their salary/compensation expectations)
  • This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement with the flexibility to work from both home and the worksite
  • This position is eligible for the EDO program (Earned Day Off)
  • Hire is dependent upon a Police Information Check satisfactory to the City of Edmonton
