Computational and Data Systems Initiative (CDSI)

1-year contract

Position Summary

Reporting to the Associate Director, Strategic Operations and Research, the Communications Officer will be responsible for crafting compelling communication materials to promote the Computational and Data Systems Initiative (CDSI) across platforms – this includes news, press releases, reports, graphic design, video, photography, web, newsletter and social media. This role involves managing communication channels, amplifying the impact of groundbreaking research and events to diverse audiences, and creating opportunities to increase the CDSI’s visibility and exposure within McGill, locally, nationally and internationally.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Participate in the planning and oversee the implementation of the CDSI’s communications plan to promote the Initiative and build awareness of its research, events, and activities, in alignment with its mission and strategic objectives.
  • Develop content and promotional materials for a variety of media, including written, photographic, graphic design and video for both external and internal audiences, ensuring it is aligned with the CDSI’s vision, mission and objectives.
  • Create and manage online content for the CDSI website, its subsites, and related social media platforms (X/Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube, Instagram, etc.). Ensure information is accurate, accessible, complete and coherent on all platforms.
  • Generate ideas, conduct interviews and research information. Write and edit articles including “digests” of research and related news.
  • Track and analyze analytics data to evaluate the success of various communication efforts.
  • Proactively identify new opportunities and challenges within the communications portfolio and provide professional expertise and advice on a variety of communication activities and events.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of policies and new initiatives that support the strategic direction of the unit.
  • Collaborate with faculty and central communications teams as well as external stakeholders to promote CDSI-related news and information.
  • Liaise with student-led groups at the University to promote activities and events.
  • Keep current with best practices, new tools and trends in the rapidly changing field of web communications, design, multimedia and social media.
  • Develop and implement procedures, controls and record keeping systems for the CDSI.
  • Participate at meetings, make recommendations and provide solutions.

Other Qualifying Skills and Abilities:

  • Minimum of three years of experience in a communications role, including working with electronic communications such as social media.
  • Proven ability to write and edit materials for print, online, and social media channels, and create compelling content.
  • Superior written and oral communication skills in both English and French, with the ability to make science palpable to a wide-ranging audience.
  • Experience in implementing communications plans and using analytics to assess the success of communications initiatives, a plus.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills, both for internal and external relations, including tact, diplomacy, discretion and good judgment.
  • Detail-oriented and organized, and able to set priorities, multitask, work both independently and as part of team, under pressure, and meet deadlines.
  • Proficient using MS Office Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Outlook and Excel), as well as web content management and social media tools and platforms (e.g., Drupal, WordPress, Instagram, X, LinkedIn, Facebook, YouTube, etc.).
  • Familiarity with HTML, Canva, and Adobe Creative Suite, an asset.
  • Familiarity with or interest in artificial intelligence and data science, an asset.
