The Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) Programmer oversees the design and programming of automation control systems. This role requires collaborating closely with the mechanical design team, control system programming for industrial machines and check fixtures, troubleshooting and debugging control systems and oversee projects from concept to buyoff.
Primary Responsibilities:
Electrical Design & Controls Programming:
- Electrical Design: Create and document panel layouts, wiring diagrams, and BOMs using CAD tools (AutoCAD Electrical, EPLAN, SkyCAD, SolidWorks, Cimatron).
- Programming & Automation: Develop PLCs, HMIs, motion control, robots, and vision systems using software like Allen-Bradley, Siemens, and Beckhoff.
- Safety Compliance: Design and implement safety circuits, ensuring adherence to industry standards.
- Industry Knowledge: Stay updated on trends, technologies, and regulations to enhance designs and maintain system reliability.
Project Design & Execution:
- Collaboration & Integration: Work with the Design Team from concept to completion to integrate control systems into machine designs for feasibility and efficiency
- Project Management: Ensure project timelines, budgets, and quality standards align with company and stakeholder expectations.
- Testing & Troubleshooting: Conduct system testing, troubleshoot, debug, and resolve integration issues between mechanical and electrical systems.
- Documentation & Training: Create and maintain system documentation, including operator manuals and training materials.
- Client Interaction & Travel: Attend client meetings onsite and offsite; occasional travel within North America for installations and technical support, ensure all travel documents (licence, passport etc.) are current and valid
Additional Duties: Perform other tasks and projects as assigned
Required Skills & Qualifications:
Industry Experience:
- 5+ years of experience in automation controls, electrical design, ladder logic, structured text, programming and related languages
- Proficiency with CAD software for electrical design such as AutoCAD Electrical, EPLAN etc.
- Proficiency with PLC brands such as Siemens, Allen Bradley, Beckhoff etc. Familiarity with industrial communication protocols (e.g., Profinet, Ethernet/IP, IO Link)
- Experience with industrial robotics (FANUC, ABB, KUKA etc.) is preferred
Education:
- High school diploma required
- Post-secondary degree or diploma PLC Programming, electrical design, computer science, electrical engineering or equivalent experience
Technical Skills:
- Proficient in reading and understanding electrical drawings, blueprints, GD&T, CAD files.
- Ability to manipulate CAD files using SolidWorks or SpinFire to assess part requirements
- Proficient in MS Office, particularly Excel
Manufacturing Knowledge: Familiar with various manufacturing industries, their products, terminology, and processes
Specialized Knowledge: Strong understanding of building gauges and fixtures within the manufacturing process
Reporting Skills: Ability to prepare estimates, budgets, status reports, and other necessary documentation
Relationship Management: Capable of maintaining productive relationships with customers, suppliers, vendors, and team members
Competencies:
- Communication/Interpersonal Skills: Strong ability to communicate effectively in English, both oral and written, independently and in a team environment
- Critical Thinking & Problem Solving: Skilled in identifying and resolving issues efficiently
