Media Relations Officer – Administrative Assistant

The opportunity:

The University of Manitoba is seeking a dynamic and strategic Media Relations Officer to help elevate the university’s profile locally, nationally, and globally. In this key role, you will build strong relationships across faculties and units to identify compelling stories, projects, and individuals worthy of media attention. You’ll lead the development of media pitches, advisories, and releases while proactively managing media requests and identifying opportunities to highlight the university’s impact and expertise.

Reporting to the Director of Media Relations and Marketing Initiatives (MRMI), you will support the university’s media strategy by monitoring media coverage, preparing media briefs, maintaining expert databases and media lists, and collaborating with internal and external partners to ensure alignment with UM’s communications goals. Your ability to foster relationships with journalists, stay current on media trends, and craft engaging content—including video integration—will help shape how the university shares its story with the world.

The qualifications and experience we’re looking for:

  • A University degree in relevant field is required.
  • At least 4 years working in media or demonstrated knowledge of media relations is required.
  • Experience shooting video and editing for television or social media platforms required.
  • Experience in program evaluation involving a variety of data collection and evaluation methods required.
  • Experience working with local and national media required.
  • Some experience working with media monitoring and social listening platforms such as Cision or Meltwater is considered an asset but not required.
  • Experience measuring and reporting on effectiveness of outreach is considered an asset but not required.
  • Experience planning media events is an asset.
  • An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Excellent communication skills including strong writing ability is required.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office software and other programs/software is required.
  • High level of discretion and confidentiality is required.
  • Confident and professional when working with senior leaders is required.
  • Adept at seeing different sides or layers to a topic and cultivating multiple story angles.
  • Ability to work autonomously or in teams remote and on-site
  • Ability to identify what matters most to media and proven track record of successful pitches.
  • Satisfactory work record, including satisfactory attendance and punctuality, is required.
