About the role
The Alma Mater Society (AMS) is the University of British Columbia’s (UBC) student society, and works to improve the academic, social and personal lives of the 56,000 UBC students at its Vancouver campus. The AMS also runs nine food and beverage outlets, a catering and conference operation, and the AMS Student Nest, providing on-campus employment opportunities and generating revenue that goes directly back into supporting the students at UBC.
Position title: Student Life Research Coordinator
Reports to: Vice President, Student Life
Employee status: Hourly Exempt, Appointed
Length of term: July 14, 2025 – April 30, 2026
Hours per week: 15 hours per week
Compensation: $19.00 per hour
Position Purpose
The Student Life Research Coordinator supports the VP Student Life in creating data-informed decisions that maximize improvement to campus spirit and mental health programming. This role is critical to improving AMS engagement strategies and determining how to improve AMS programming to better meet student needs through quantitative and qualitative analyses. The ideal candidate has a strong understanding of experimental processes and the impact that different social environments have on students and has a keen interest in improving campus culture and well-being.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Support the design and facilitation of surveys, focus groups, and feedback tools on campus engagement, event participation, and student belonging.
- Conduct research on campus spirit and mental health, including trends in programming, community engagement, and emerging student needs ensuring effective reporting and final documentation.
- Maintain records and organize findings in an accessible, shareable format for continuity and institutional memory.
- Support annual reporting and strategic planning by defining valuable metrics, collecting feedback, and analyzing results for the VP Student Life and in collaboration with AMS Events.
- Assist in the development and implementation of resources to support student groups based on their needs, such as an event planning framework.
- Benchmark AMS student life initiatives against peer institutions and student unions.
- Support the VP Student Life in preparing and delivering presentations, reports, or proposals to AMS Council, student groups and other key stakeholders.
- Uphold the AMS’s mission, values, constitution, and Strategic Plan.
- Other duties as required.
Qualifications and Experience
- Must be a registered student at UBC Vancouver or one of its affiliated colleges.
- Experience in research (preferably social sciences), program evaluation, or community needs assessments is an asset.
- Experience with event planning and coordination is an asset, preferably with an AMS Club or Constituency.
- Ability to work independently while contributing to a collaborative team culture.
- Must be able to work flexibly, adapting to the different needs and limitations of each project.
- Ability to meet deadlines and work well under pressure.
- Able to multi-task and manage several projects with different themes.
- Proven track record of showing initiative and maintaining confidentiality.
- Interest in community building is an asset.
